Gladiator 2’s Paul Mescal explains why he didn’t rewatch first movie
As a seasoned gamer of both the big and small screen, I have to say that Paul Mescal‘s journey into the world of Gladiator II is nothing short of captivating. Having grown up with Russell Crowe’s Maximus, it’s refreshing to see how Mescal has chosen to carve out his own path as Lucius, creating a distinct hero away from the shadow of the original film.
Actor Paul Mescal, who played a role in “Gladiator II”, aimed to distinguish himself as much as possible from the original film.
In the year 2000, the Irish actor portrayed Lucius, initially introduced as a child in Ridley Scott’s Academy Award-winning film “Gladiator.” As a result of the Roman Empire’s devastation of his homeland, an adult Lucius takes up the role of a gladiator. In this capacity, he pursues revenge and manages his hidden royal identity concurrently.
As I sat down for a chat with Digital Spy, I opened up about crafting my unique take on a hero, steering clear from the shadow of Maximus, as portrayed brilliantly by Russell Crowe in Gladiator. To ensure I didn’t lean too heavily on the original, I implemented a few strategic moves along the way.
“I made two decisions,” Mescal started.
One approach was to avoid re-watching the first movie after being cast, and simply play the character as written. Trying to mimic Maximus would only result in monotony for me.
I prefer not to work on a movie that doesn’t ignite my enthusiasm and motivation each day.
Mescal also remembered his first day on set, where “you’d walk out and there’s something new to see.”
On my first day in Morocco, I found myself on a truly colossal set. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, and I believe it may well be the largest I’ll ever encounter.” (He went on to say…)
The actor admits feeling overpowered due to the novelty, yet he regarded this experience neither as an issue nor something that interfered with his acting responsibilities.
On the opening day of any movie, whether large or small, I believe there’s consistently a sense of pressure. This is because one deeply cares for the project, and this emotional investment remains unchanged even when the film is larger in scope.
The challenge was, actually, overcoming doubts and fears to do justice to his character.
Acting as someone other than yourself, regardless of the situation, is always a tough task. There are instances when self-doubt creeps in, but essentially, you’re striving to unravel the mystery of another person’s life.
“That’s something that can just keep you awake, because there’s no end point to that journey. Like, you never arrive at the end and go like: I know who this person is fully. You have a suspicion, and you just trying to follow that suspicion.”
I’m thrilled to be part of a star-studded lineup in this game, alongside heavyweights like Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger. What a roster!
Based on initial film critiques, the sequel of “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator 2,” has garnered a 77% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This score is slightly lower than the 79% given to the original movie.
Gladiator II is released in UK cinemas on November 15, and in US cinemas on November 22.
