Gladiator 2 new trailer confirms major fan theory about Lucius
As a seasoned gamer of historical epics, I must say that the trailer for ‘Gladiator 2’ has sent me into a frenzy! The confirmation of the fan theory about Lucius being Maximus’s son is a momentous revelation that I have been eagerly waiting for since the original film.
The freshly released trailer for what seems to be “Gladiator 2” contains an exciting disclosure that aligns with a popular speculation among fans.
In the trailer, I find myself, as a spectator, witnessing a heartfelt conversation between Lucilla (played by Connie Neilsen) and her son Lucius (portrayed by Paul Mescal). Before they engage in a battle within the Colosseum, she advises him, “Lucius, harness your father’s might. His name was Maximus, and I see traces of him in you.
In the initial preview, there were indications suggesting that Lucius is Maximus’s son. This was evident when Lucilla handed him Maximus’s ring, and we also noticed Lucius showing admiration for his father’s armor, a scene that reappears in this trailer.
It remains undecided if this is the scene where Lucius discovers Maximus as his father, but the complete picture will be revealed when the much-anticipated sequel comes out in November.
After the trailer’s unveiling, Paul Mescal shared with Entertainment Weekly his insights on the major revelation and how he had been informed of it during his initial discussions with Ridley Scott. However, even though he knew about it, the disclosure still managed to surprise him, as he put it, “I was taken aback, saying something like, ‘Wow, that’s incredible!’
Mescal added, “He brought it up during the speech, but what makes it even more striking is seeing it in writing. And to bear that weight of accountability can be intriguing.
In the screenplay, it takes care of many details such as the symbolic act of rubbing dirt between the hands, the specific DNA, and inherited genetics of the character Lucius. Therefore, in my interpretation, I aimed to set aside these specifics.
Essentially, the initial backstory of Lucius in the movie sets him on a completely distinct path compared to Maximus. Initially, I was anticipating that some aspects of their genetic makeup and even subtle physical mannerisms would contribute, albeit modestly, to their acting performances.
As a gamer, I was totally hooked by the unveiling in the latest trailer, but what really grabbed my attention was the scene where our protagonist, Lucius, squares off against some formidable baboons within the Colosseum. Not to mention, it gave us a glimpse of Denzel Washington’s crucial character, Macrinus, adding even more intrigue to the storyline.
Following the debut of the initial trailer, there were comments about Washington’s accent in the upcoming sequel, an issue he later addressed and defended.
Gladiator II is released in UK cinemas on November 15 and in US cinemas on November 22.
