Gilmore Girls Fans Are Obsessed with This New Ballet Drama on Prime Video
Despite continued anticipation among Gilmore Girls fans for another revival following the series’ unresolved finale, its creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, haven’t stopped producing new shows. The duo who masterminded the teen drama ran the flagship series for seven seasons before it concluded in 2007. Nearly a decade later, fan pressure resulted in a cast and crew reunion for Netflix’s limited reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. However, this miniseries is not their only accomplishment since then. From Bunheads to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, they’ve remained active, and their latest production recently premiered on Amazon Prime Video.
The show, titled “Étoile“, focuses on two renowned ballet companies based in Paris and New York. In an attempt to preserve their institutions, these companies exchange their top dancers to inject fresh energy. The production delves into the hurdles and ardor of artistic ambition within the ruthless realm of professional dance. Characters find themselves adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings and dynamics as they strive to maintain their dream. Although the narrative may not mirror the storyline of “Gilmore Girls“, viewers of the new show would agree that it carries the Palladino essence, which has kept their iconic work relevant and beloved even in modern times.
‘Étoile’ Has the Comedy and Drama of ‘Gilmore Girls’
Fans of “Gilmore Girls” now have another series to adore, as all eight episodes of the new Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino creation titled “Étoile ” are available on Prime Video. This fresh show, filled with quick-witted dialogue, eccentric characters, and a deep exploration of the complex relationships between dancers and their companies, continues the traditionally entertaining storytelling style that draws viewers back repeatedly.

One thing that really drew people to Gilmore Girls wasn’t just the concept itself, but the clever conversations and intricate relationship dynamics. Instead of relying heavily on the plot, it was more about the characters and their development, which made viewers feel deeply connected as they witnessed the characters grow over time while dealing with themes like love, friendship, and self-discovery that resonate widely.
Although a drama centered around a ballet trader might not initially evoke thoughts of the series Gilmore Girls, which explores a close mother-daughter bond, the original writing and talented cast of Étoile certainly share a comparable style. However, it’s important to note that Étoile maintains its own distinct narrative voice, making it a unique story with a recognizable theme.
‘Étoile’ Is Also Reminiscent of ‘Bunheads’
The show Étoile shares the same witty style and heartwarming tone as Gilmore Girls, but its narrative bears striking similarities to a different series by Amy Sherman-Palladino, namely Bunheads. Debuting in 2012 on ABC, Bunheads follows the life of Michelle Simms (played by Sutton Foster), a former Las Vegas showgirl and ballerina. Upon an impromptu marriage, she relocates to a quaint Californian town and takes up teaching at a ballet studio. There, she forges connections with her unusual students as she navigates the challenges of adapting to her new surroundings.
In the style of Palladino, every production is marked by fast-paced dialogue and distinct character interactions, and Bunheads is no exception – it delivers these elements beautifully. Sadly, the series didn’t continue beyond its first season. However, with Étoile joining the cast and a dance studio setting offering a familiar ballet backdrop, the essence of the canceled show lives on through Prime Video. Here’s hoping that the new production finds a dedicated audience in streaming that ABC seemed to overlook, avoiding an untimely demise like its predecessor.
Is ‘Étoile’ the Fresh Start That Fans of ‘Gilmore Girls’ Need?
As a dedicated Gilmore Girls fan, I was absolutely thrilled when Amy Sherman-Palladino announced the revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. But truth be told, the ending didn’t quite live up to my expectations for many reasons. The limited reboot, set nine years after the Season 7 finale, comprises of four episodes, one for each season, mirroring the original series structure. It was heartening to see our cherished characters again, but unfortunately, the showrunners seemed unable to recapture the enchantment of the initial series.
In essence, the somber realism that ran through the entire reboot and the surprising revelation about Rory’s pregnancy created a sense of letdown in its return. On one side, the plot development and concluding moments seemed fitting as they marked the end of Rory’s journey towards maturity. However, on the other hand, Stars Hollow was once an enchanting escape for viewers, and there remains uncertainty about the identity of the baby’s father. Although it’s possible that Gilmore Girls could return again (and the possibility isn’t entirely ruled out by The Palladinos), many long-time fans found the ending to be somewhat disappointing.
Étoile might just become the latest fascination for fans of Palladino, offering a similar blend of sharp dialogue and humor alongside a unique setting, story, and characters. However, no replica can truly capture the essence of Gilmore Girls, even if another revival were to occur. Yet, Étoile provides a distinct, yet Gilmore-Girls-inspired, enchantment that viewers wouldn’t want to miss out on.
Stream Étoile now on Prime Video.
