Mubi’s new romantic film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, will be in theaters this summer. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival months ago and has already earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to early reviews.
Currently, Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s a remarkable achievement for a slasher film, which usually don’t receive positive reviews from critics. Many critics are giving the movie a perfect score and are calling it one of the most original horror films of the 21st century.
Critics Are Unanimously Impressed at Cannes
Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com describes the movie as delightfully flawed – a bit messy, unpredictable, and uneven, but also incredibly fun to watch. He notes that most films aren’t quite this uniquely captivating.
Hannah Einbinder skillfully manages a difficult role, bringing both power and emotional openness to this unusual love story, which is filled with surreal imagery, violence, and a strangely twisted romance, according to Damon Wise of Deadline Hollywood Daily.
According to a review in Little White Lies, Gillian Anderson cleverly plays with her own public image, and Hannah Einbinder shines as a charmingly awkward and endearing newcomer. Jack Haven also delivers a fantastic performance as the wrongly accused killer, Little Death.
Gillian Anderson Plays a Slasher Film Final Girl
Jane Schoenbrun, known for their 2024 psychological horror film, wrote and directed Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The movie centers on Kris (played by Einbinder), a filmmaker tasked with reviving the Camp Miasma series – a parody of the Friday the 13th films. Kris tries to convince a reclusive former actress (Gillian Anderson), who originally played the ‘final girl,’ to return, and as their connection deepens, a different kind of terror rises to the surface.
Schoenbrun explained that they create the kinds of movies they longed for as a child. Their new film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, is their most ambitious effort to create a late-night, classic horror movie—the kind you’d stumble upon at a video store and watch with friends.
The director shared their enthusiasm for filming this summer, joking that working with Hannah Einbinder and the teams at Mubi and Plan B was like unleashing a chaotic flood of ‘blood, guts, and various other fluids.’ They expressed gratitude for the movie being greenlit, playfully suggesting it would be a wild and messy experience.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma will have its wide release in theaters on Aug. 7, 2026.
