Gillian Anderson’s ’70s-set drama with “unforgettable characters” reveals heart-wrenching trailer

I just saw the trailer for *Trespasses*, and wow, it looks intense! It’s a new Channel 4 drama starring Gillian Anderson and Lola Petticrew, and it’s set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. From the trailer, it seems like it’s going to be a really emotional and powerful story.

The new series is based on Louise Kennedy’s 2022 novel and stars Anderson and Petticrew as a mother and daughter. The story focuses on Petticrew’s character as she begins a relationship with a lawyer, played by Tom Cullen.

The first trailer for the film introduces Cushla (Petticrew) and Michael (Cullen) and their blossoming romance, which is complicated by strong community tensions and described as a ‘forbidden love story’. As they fall for each other, their relationship becomes increasingly risky.

What to Read Next

The story begins in 1975, in a town near Belfast. While working a night shift at her family’s pub – a place frequented by both locals and soldiers – schoolteacher Cushla meets Michael, a married Protestant man who is older than her.

He frequently represents people accused of being involved with the IRA and spends time with artistic, unconventional friends who both bother and fascinate Cushla. Despite recognizing the potential for conflict, Cushla and this man find themselves strongly attracted to each other.

In a dangerous world where secrets are deadly, Cushla and Michael fall passionately in love. Their affair could cost them absolutely everything, unfolding against a backdrop of fear and suspicion.

Alongside the previously mentioned actors, Martin McCann and Gerard McCarthy will also star in *Trespasses*. Dawn Shadforth is directing the film, and Ailbhe Keogan has written the screenplay based on the novel.

Keogan described adapting the novel into a script as surprisingly easy, explaining that the team was constantly inspired by Louise’s beautiful writing. It served as their guiding principle throughout the entire process.

We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to create this world, and especially to bring the memorable characters of Cushla and Michael’s Belfast to life. The show will be powerful and visually stunning, exploring important themes with passion and emotion, but even through difficult moments, it will leave you feeling hopeful.

Trespasses currently has no release date.
