Giancarlo Esposito confirms changes to Captain America character: ‘It was a whirlwind’
It was revealed by Giancarlo Esposito that the character of Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, the serpent leader in “Captain America: Brave New World”, wasn’t initially intended for him to portray.
The film, which was delayed by over a year, looked very different when Esposito first signed on.
In an interview with Empire (as reported by ScreenRant), Esposito shared that his original role was intended to be King Cobra, a part he was thrilled about.
According to the actor, it was initially planned for release in March 2024, but they opted to make some adjustments instead.
I had a call with producer Nate Moore, who informed me that I might play a character named King Cobra. This intrigued me since, when strolling in my neighborhood, some African-Americans greet me with ‘What’s up, King?’, and I find this endearing.
In the realm of admiration, I’m often referred to as ‘King.’ Truly, it’s a title that humbles me. However, I’ve come to learn that there are other ‘Kings’ in the Marvel universe, which led me back to the comic books for more insights about this connection, and it seems to be associated with the Serpent Society.
Later, Esposito clarified that the persona Moore developed bore resemblance to King, but was actually Sidewinder – a character introduced back in 1980’s Marvel Two-in-One issue number 64.
He explained further: “They discussed developing a character who felt genuine, with a mercenary vibe. When they returned for extra filming, their aim was to make the movie more realistic, and their current focus was on this new character. Consequently, it became quite a hectic time for me.
I gathered my thoughts, then confidently stepped inside and completed the task swiftly. Furthermore, I fervently wish to extend my stay in this world for a while longer.
Or:
I concentrated, entered, and quickly finished the job. Additionally, I hope to spend more time in this universe.
