Ghosts star Martha Howe-Douglas announces exciting new role

As a long-time fan of British theatre and a self-proclaimed aficionado of all things Christmas, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Martha Howe-Douglas joining Nick Mohammed’s A Christmas Carol(ish) at London’s West End! With her enchanting voice and magnetic stage presence, she’s bound to bring Rochelle Kelly to life in a way that will make audiences feel as if they’re sitting right there in the lounge with her.

As an enthusiastic admirer, I’m thrilled to share the news that the talented Martha Howe-Douglas, best known for her role in “Ghosts,” is now part of Nick Mohammed’s production of A Christmas Carol in London’s West End! This casting addition promises a delightful festive season filled with exceptional performances.

Mohammed, known for playing a role in Ted Lasso, is set to star in A Christmas Carol-esque musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale. The character Mr. Swallow will be stepping into the spotlight at Sohoplace. Previews begin on November 16, with regular performances running from November 21 until December 31.

In 2022, the Soho Theatre played host to a development run of the show, where Howe-Douglas took on the role of lounge singer Rochelle Kelly. Meanwhile, Kieran Hodgson and David Elms returned to their previous roles as Jonathan and Mr Goldsmith, respectively.

Speaking about taking to the stage, Howe-Douglas took to Twitter/X to spread the word.

She expressed her immense joy by saying, “I can hardly contain my enthusiasm to share that I’ll be part of the cast for A CHRISTMAS CAROL(ish) at sohoplacelondon starting from 16 November.” She’s had a long-held ambition to perform as West End Wendy, and adding Christmas to the mix? That’s the cherry on top! Don’t forget to join us for the show!

The story begins with Santa unexpectedly deciding to cancel Christmas at the last moment, leading to a visit from three spirits aiming to rekindle his holiday cheer.

With just a few hours left before deadline, and only one functioning reindeer remaining, it seems like quite a challenge for him to meet all his delivery commitments in time!

Mohammed teased the “bigger” and “madder” show, calling the West End run a dream come true.

He expressed his immense excitement about eventually bringing Mr. Swallow to a West End stage, even though he will appear as both Scrooge and Santa Claus in the production.

It’s a delight beyond words to finally bring such an extravagant, music-filled and eccentric performance to life. I eagerly anticipate the moment when audiences who witnessed its initial run at Soho Theatre are astonished by how much more expansive and, for the most part, crazier it’s become!

Among the numerous adaptations of A Christmas Carol available during the holiday season, there’s no doubt that this particular version stands out as the unique one. Every single word, context, and essence have been customized to fulfill my distinct preferences.

“Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!”

Tickets for the holiday-themed play “A Christmas Carol(ish)” will be open for everyone to purchase starting September 20th. If you’d like early access, tickets can be secured two days earlier, on September 18th, directly from their website: www.achristmascarolish.com.
