After two years of uncertainty, Mckenna Grace provides an update on Ghostbusters 6.
Mckenna Grace first appeared in the Ghostbusters universe with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a film that continued the story 30 years after Ghostbusters II. She returned as Phoebe Spengler in 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, but the movie didn’t do well financially, earning only $200 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. As a result, the future of a sixth Ghostbusters film is currently uncertain.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter about her work on Scream 7, Grace addressed the future of Ghostbusters. She said she hasn’t heard anything new about a sequel to Frozen Empire, but she’s optimistic because Ghostbusters is a popular and enduring franchise. She’d happily reprise her role as Phoebe if given the chance. Her full comments are available below.
I’m optimistic about the future, but I haven’t received any updates recently. If I had, I wouldn’t be able to share them. I would be thrilled to reprise my role as Phoebe – playing her was a defining part of my life and career, and I really grew up with the character. Being involved with Ghostbusters and introducing it to a new audience was a true honor, so I’d always be happy to play Phoebe again. However, if something were happening soon, I think I would have heard about it by now.
It seems like any movie or franchise can be revisited these days, and I’m curious if and when that might happen with this one. I’m hopeful I’ll get the chance to be involved again, and it’s common for studios to consider sequels or continuations when a film does well or gains a dedicated fanbase. I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Right now, I don’t have any inside information, but I definitely think a return is possible down the line.
The original Ghostbusters came out in 1984, followed by Ghostbusters II in 1989. After a long wait, the franchise returned in 2016 with a reboot directed by Paul Feig and starring Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kristen Wiig – though it proved to be quite controversial. Counting the original two films, Afterlife, and Frozen Empire, any future movie would be the sixth installment in the Ghostbusters series.
In December 2024, news surfaced that Sony Animation and Netflix are working on an animated Ghostbusters movie, but details about the story are still secret. If completed before other projects, this film would be the sixth Ghostbusters movie, appearing ahead of a planned sequel to Frozen Empire that would continue the story of Phoebe and the newer characters. There are also reports that an animated Ghostbusters television show is in the works.
Dan Aykroyd has indicated that he and the other original Ghostbusters actors likely won’t be involved in any future sequels to Frozen Empire. In 2024, he explained that the new films have a different direction and cast, and he believes the franchise should continue to evolve beyond the original movies. While Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson reprised their roles in both Afterlife and Frozen Empire, he doesn’t anticipate further involvement.
Mckenna Grace is excited to revisit the story of Phoebe and the other new characters, but her acting career is incredibly busy. In addition to her ongoing roles in the Ghostbusters and Scream films, she’s landed parts as Maysilee Donner in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and Daphne Blake in the upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series on Netflix. She’s also appeared in popular shows and movies like The Big Bang Theory, various Marvel and DC projects, Five Nights at Freddy’s, PAW Patrol, and The Conjuring series.
