Get Ready to Soar: Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon 2 Is Coming!

It’s high time to brush off those saddles! We’re all set for our return voyage to Berk, this time with an exciting, real-life adaptation of the beloved film “How to Train Your Dragon.

In 2025, the debut of the first “How to Train Your Dragon” movie captured the hearts of audiences once more, as it soared into the skies. This film enhanced numerous elements, including its supporting characters and narrative, among other improvements.

It’s been known for a while now that a follow-up is being made. However, when might we get to see it? Here are some details on the upcoming “How to Train Your Dragon 2” that have been disclosed so far.

What Is The Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon Release Date?

As I pen this down in July 2025, the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is slated for release on June 11, 2027. Yes, you’ve heard it right! The release date has been announced officially, even before the first film hit the screens, back in April 2025 during CinemaCon.

It’s incredible that we’ve learned the movie will be released in 2027, even though it won’t make the 2026 schedule. Interestingly, the initial live-action film was announced in 2023, and usually, these films take around two years to hit the screens. So, with a sequel already confirmed, we can expect more updates about it fairly soon.

The How To Train Your Dragon 2 Cast

Although the cast for How To Train Your Dragon 2 hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s likely that some familiar characters will return.

  • Mason Thames as Hiccup
  • Nico Parker as Astrid
  • Gerard Butler as Stoick
  • Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch
  • Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson
  • Julian Gennison as Fishlegs Ingerman
  • Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston
  • Harry Trevaldsyn as Tuffnut Thornston

Besides these key characters, many others might rise to prominence, but it’s these primary figures that have particularly captured my attention. To be honest, I’m eager for any returning faces, whether it’s the charming Nico Parker as Astrid, whom I adore, or the lively sidekicks.

In the animated adaptation of the sequel, several fresh figures made an appearance, including Valka Haddock, who is Stoick’s wife and was voice acted by Cate Blanchett, and Eret, a dragon trapper’s son, voiced by Kit Harington from “Game of Thrones”. It’s quite plausible that we could witness their characters returning – perhaps even in live-action adaptations – but the future remains to be seen.

What Is How To Train Your Dragon 2 About?

The follow-up is a movie based on the second animated film in the How To Train Your Dragon film sequence. It’s one of my favorite films from the trilogy, and I’m really looking forward to watching it unfold on the cinema screen.

Five years later, Hicrup finds himself traversing the world on dragons with his companions. Along their journey, they encounter a power-hungry madman named Drago, who seeks global domination through harnessing dragons as an army. To his surprise, Hicrup also rediscovers his mother, whom he believed to be deceased.

In my opinion, the second part stands out as the peak of the trilogy, boasting remarkable vocal performances. Numerous captivating scenes were beautifully translated onto the cinema screen. The character of Hiccup’s mother has been eagerly anticipated by many.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share an exciting piece of news I stumbled upon. Back in June 2025, director Dean Deblois candidly revealed in an interview with The Wrap that they have plans to cast Cate Blanchett for the live-action role of Valka, much like how Gerard Butler was chosen for the live-action role of Stoick. It’s a fascinating development that has left me eagerly anticipating what’s next!

It’s hers to turn down, let’s put it that way.

Honestly? Sign me up.

Dean DeBlois Is Returning As Director And Writer

In the sequel’s unveiling, it’s been made clear that DeBlois will resume his role behind the camera for the movie. He previously co-directed the initial animated “How to Train Your Dragon” with Chris Sanders and then took over solo for the subsequent two films, along with a live-action adaptation. Notably, he has contributed to every script and is deeply immersed in the universe of Berk.

They Are Still In The Script Phase As Of June 2025

It’s understandable that everyone is eager to learn more about what the sequel will entail, but as of now, DeBlois has shared that filming hasn’t started just yet. In an interview with DiscussingFilm back in June 2025, the director revealed they were still working on the script phase.

Currently, it’s quite vague. However, among the three animated movies, there seems to be a general preference for the second one among fans, and I’m determined to maintain that hope. The second movie, “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” resembles our “Empire Strikes Back” in a way. It expanded and deepened the storyline, making characters more complex and introducing scarier elements as well.

Additionally, he mentioned that there are specific aspects from the second animated movie he hopes to rectify in the upcoming live-action follow-up.

Reflecting on the past, there are aspects of the second movie I directed that I wish I could revisit in the live-action remake. We’re not bound by the original’s story and plot, but rather, this is an opportunity for exploration. As a matter of fact, I’m currently working on the script itself.

With that in mind, we can expect an update about filming or casting in the coming months.

The First Movie’s Ending Has Me Excited For A Few Things In HTTYD2

There’s plenty to look forward to! I’ve spoken about Hiccup’s mother coming back, and I can hardly wait to find out who’ll play that part. Additionally, I can hardly contain my excitement over the exploration of the dragon realm.

According to DeBlois, the world of Berk and its surrounding seas greatly expands in the second movie. It’s an exciting prospect for fans of the franchise who love dragons to see this world brought to life on the big screen.

It’s intriguing to ponder if Kit Harington might actually portray Eret in some way. Given Eret’s advanced age compared to other characters, I believe Kit could convincingly bring the character to life. If he doesn’t, I find myself curious about the casting decision.

Gosh, this is just making me that much more excited for the sequel. Can 2027 get here sooner?
