Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris DBE stated that the widespread appeal of “Call the Midwife” in today’s media environment prompted this move to extend the franchise. She went on to say, “Encouraged by this outpouring of affection and excitement, we believe now is the ideal moment to broaden our universe and bring our nuns and midwives to the big screen with our film. And we’ll delve back into the past with a prequel!

There is a lot about the movie that remains unclear, but Eva Yates, Director of BBC Film, noted:

We’re thrilled to announce an exciting expansion! Just like ‘Call the Midwife’ has consistently delved into the challenges and stories of women throughout history, we’re now taking these beloved characters beyond the small screen and into theaters!

The characters under discussion are part of the present cast, appearing in a foreign backdrop. The script for this film is penned by the original series creator, Heidi Thomas, while it will be produced by Harris and Ann Tricklebank.

The “Call the Midwife” film is expected to tackle similar contentious issues as the series, though details about the setting and approach remain unspecified. Beginning in early 2026, Season 15 of “Call the Midwife” premieres on television, featuring a two-part Christmas special that takes place in both Hong Kong and London. This dual setting hints that the movie might be set in Hong Kong.

‘Call The Midwife’ Is Getting a Prequel TV Series Set in WWII

However, beyond the boundaries of Worth’s books, Call the Midwife has already explored new territories and will continue to do so with its upcoming prequel series.

In her debut book, titled “Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times“, Worth initially gives an overview of midwifery’s history in Britain before sharing her personal encounters. During this historical account, she commends the midwives at Nonnatus House, acknowledging they served “among the most impoverished members of society for almost the entire 19th century and were the sole dependable midwives” in the region. Worth also highlights that these midwives persisted through London’s Blitz, enduring relentless bombings on the docks. They delivered babies in various shelters, dugouts, church crypts, and underground stations during this time.

This prequel for “Call the Midwife,” set during World War Two, serves as a means to establish the backstory for the main series and weave historical events from one of Britain’s most difficult eras into the narrative. As stated by the show’s writer and creator, this is an opportunity to provide context and delve deeper into history.

After experiencing tears, laughter, and anger from 1957 to 1971, I found myself longing to explore further back in time. The Blitz years in the East End were remarkable – they were a mix of heartache, unity, bravery, and happiness. Bombs were dropping, new lives were being born, and the Sisters persevered. There will be plenty in the prequel for our dedicated fans, with the return of some familiar (although significantly younger!) characters.
