For years, she’s been famous for always wearing white. She consistently appears at events – from premieres and races to social gatherings – in stylish, all-white outfits.
On Wednesday, Geri Halliwell-Horner, the former Spice Girl, age 53, met with Queen Camilla, 78, wearing a fashionable camel coat instead of her usual white outfits.
The Duke and Duchess visited Maggie’s cancer support centre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Maggie’s centre opening.
While visiting the charity, they spoke with people affected by cancer and learned how Maggie’s Cheltenham had helped them through their journeys.
The Queen supports this charity, which is celebrating 30 years of helping people across the UK affected by the disease. They now run 27 centers nationwide.
But can you guess the reason behind Geri’s fashion switch-up for the royal meeting?
Okay, so she always wears white, like, always. But I’ve been digging, and apparently, when she has to meet, you know, the royals, she’ll sometimes wear camel or beige. It’s not that she likes those colors, it’s just… people think they’re more respectful and don’t stand out too much. Basically, she’s trying not to upstage anyone, even though, let’s be real, she could upstage anyone!
Camel and other neutral colors are popular choices for engagement rings because they look good with softer, more subtle shades – a style often seen on Queen Camilla.
Geri looked lovely in a camel coat and cream sweater during the touching visit. She happily sang the Queen’s praises after being warmly greeted with a kiss on both cheeks.
Geri, a recent supporter of the charity, shared how much she appreciates their work. She explained that having support makes a big difference, and Maggie’s brings a sense of joy to that experience.
I greatly admire the Queen. I find her to be incredibly strong and dignified. She’s a truly remarkable person who has witnessed generations come and go, and reminds us of the importance of community and supporting one another.
The singer accompanied Queen Camilla when she visited Caitlin Warrington, a 23-year-old cancer patient. Caitlin was diagnosed with a rare ovarian cancer at age 14 and experienced recurrences at 16 and 18. Thankfully, she is now in remission.
Caitlin explained that Maggie’s had been a huge help to both her and her mother, providing both emotional and financial support. She said it had been ‘really great’ for them both.
Caitlin’s mom, Nikki, explained that hospitals don’t always provide the ongoing support families need. She said that after treatment, you’re often left feeling alone, whether you’re waiting in a cold room or sitting by a patient’s bedside.
Camilla explained that many questions go unanswered due to lack of time, but here, people are willing to provide answers.
Wearing a blue cashmere suit by Fiona Clare, the Queen arrived with an umbrella and was welcomed by Dame Laura Lee, the CEO of Maggie’s, and Cheltenham’s mayor, Councillor David Willingham.
In her speech, she portrayed Maggie’s as a cheerful and calm environment, filled with people who shared moving stories about the positive impact Maggie’s had on their lives and the lives of their families.
Remembering Maggie Keswick Jencks, a writer, gardener, and designer who started support centers after her own battle with cancer, she shared: ‘It’s wonderful to see how much her vision has grown, and I know she’d be incredibly proud of everything these centers have achieved.’
She realized how crucial it is to feel empowered, not helpless, both for herself and for those around her. She also understood the importance of being well-informed about treatment options and having access to that information.
Maggie firmly believed that people battling cancer deeply need a peaceful and welcoming space to cope with the challenges ahead. It should be a place where they don’t feel pressured to appear strong, where they can get professional help and understanding, and simply enjoy a moment of comfort – whether that’s through a warm drink or allowing themselves to feel both sadness and joy.
Just before departing, Camilla revealed a portrait of herself painted by Eileen Hogan. The painting, which was commissioned by the King and gifted to Maggie’s by the artist, depicts Camilla seated at her desk at Birkhall.
The Cheltenham center, originally opened by Camilla in 2010, has been updated with a new extension and improved landscaping to make the area more welcoming.
There were more kisses between Camilla and Geri as the Queen left.
Dame Laura expressed her joy at welcoming The Queen to their facilities, especially as it marks the beginning of their 30th anniversary year.
We were deeply moved by her kind words about the high quality of care we provide and how Maggie’s legacy continues to help people battling cancer. We’re truly grateful she felt comfortable sharing her experience with us.
I’m deeply thankful for Her Majesty’s consistent support since she became President in 2008.
I’m confident her story will inspire others facing cancer to reach out for help and discover ways to find happiness, even with a difficult diagnosis.
Looking ahead to the next thirty years at Maggie’s, we’re striving to open sixty centres throughout the UK, ensuring no one has to cope with cancer by themselves. It’s heartening to know Maggie’s spirit continues to guide us as we work towards this goal.
