Gerard Butler’s New $636M Remake Of 16-Year-Old Fantasy Film Is Officially Coming To Netflix – And It’s Soon

Gerard Butler reprised his famous role in a movie coming out in 2025, and it will soon be available to stream online.

Dean DeBlois returned to direct How to Train Your Dragon, bringing Cressida Cowell’s popular fantasy books to life. Sixteen years after adapting the story as an animated film, he tells the story of Hiccup, an unconventional Viking son who forms an unlikely friendship with a unique dragon named Toothless. Their bond inspires Hiccup to challenge his tribe’s long-held tradition of dragon hunting.

Following the success of the movie, Netflix has confirmed that a remake of How to Train Your Dragon will be available on their service. You’ll be able to stream the fantasy adventure starting February 10th in the US, shortly after the original film leaves Peacock on February 8th.

I was so excited to see Gerard Butler back for the new How to Train Your Dragon film! He was the only actor from the original to return, thankfully reprising his wonderful role as Stoick the Vast. It was great to see him alongside the talented Mason Thames, who played Hiccup, and new faces like Nico Parker from The Last of Us, as well as Nick Frost, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison and Bronwyn James. The whole cast really seemed to bring something special to the story.

Despite some initial doubts from fans, the movie became a huge success, earning over $636 million worldwide – the most for any film in the series. It also received a remarkably high 97% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This success led to the development of How to Train Your Dragon 2, which will once again feature Cate Blanchett as the voice of her original character, and is scheduled for release on June 11, 2027.

As a big movie fan, I was excited to hear that How to Train Your Dragon is heading to Netflix! It’s all part of a deal between Netflix and Universal Pictures. Basically, Universal lets Peacock stream their movies first for about four months, then Netflix gets them for ten months, and then they go back to Peacock. We’ve already seen this work really well with other Universal films – The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The Wild Robot both did great on Netflix after initially being on Peacock, and it seems like How to Train Your Dragon will benefit from this too.

With its upcoming release on Netflix, it’s almost certain that How to Train Your Dragon will find a new audience. And, since the sequel isn’t due for over a year, this premiere will help build excitement and keep fans looking forward to future news about its production.
