Gerard Butler’s New $636M Remake Of 16-Year-Old Fantasy Film Is Now Netflix’s No. 1 Movie In The US

Another Gerard Butler movie has become a massive streaming success.

I can’t believe it, but a remake of a fantasy film from 16 years ago, starring Gerard Butler, is currently the number one movie on Netflix in the US! It’s been a great year for Butler, really. We got the new Geeland 2: Migration action sequel, and it’s awesome to see his 2021 thriller, Copshop (with Frank Grillo and Alexis Louder – seriously, check it out if you haven’t!), finally getting some love on streaming too. It was totally underrated when it first came out.

The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, released on Netflix in 2025, is already a hit. According to FlixPatrol, it reached the number one spot in the United States just one day after becoming available. This quick success follows the film’s strong performance in theaters, where it earned $636 million globally on a $150 million budget.

As a huge animation fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon! The original trilogy is already a classic for me – DreamWorks really knocked it out of the park. What’s cool is this will be the first time they’ve ever done a live-action version of one of their animated films. Mason Thames is taking on the role of Hiccup, and I can’t wait to see his take on the character and, of course, Toothless!

Critics generally liked How to Train Your Dragon, especially the story and the actors. Gerard Butler played Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father, who initially doesn’t believe humans and dragons can coexist because of their long history of fighting. Butler previously voiced Stoick in the animated films and returns to the role here.

Following the popularity of the first film, a sequel called How to Train Your Dragon 2 has been announced. It will continue the story from the second animated movie and is expected to be released in theaters on June 11, 2027, with Gerard Butler returning as the voice of Stoick. In the US, the film is continuing to perform very well, mirroring its previous success.

The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon has been well-received, earning a 77% rating from critics and a strong 97% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This enthusiastic audience response is a key reason why the film is performing so well on Netflix. Viewers are loving the remake because it stays true to the original story and delivers a captivating narrative.

I’ve been checking Netflix, and even with the new movie starring Butler showing up, I think How to Train Your Dragon is going to stay at number one for a while – probably through the weekend. It’s just such a popular film and franchise, and people clearly still love it, so I expect it’ll continue to do really well for them.
