In 2013, Gerard Butler’s Olympus Has Fallen and Channing Tatum’s White House Down were released as similar action films. Both are now available to stream for free, letting you decide which one you prefer. This kind of situation – two movies with very similar ideas coming out in the same year – has happened many times in Hollywood.
The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a surge of disaster movies. In 1997, both Dante’s Peak and Volcano were box office hits, and the following year brought Armageddon and Deep Impact, featuring heroes trying to prevent asteroid impacts. This trend continued in 2013 with White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, which both depicted terrorists seizing the White House and determined American heroes fighting to regain control.
White House Down & Olympus Has Fallen Are Both Streaming For Free On YouTube
I remember when White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen came out in 2013 – everyone was trying to figure out which one would be more popular! It was a real box office showdown, and it turned out Olympus Has Fallen just edged ahead. The best part is, you can actually watch both movies for free on YouTube right now if you’re curious to see them for yourself!
As a film buff, I always found it interesting how Olympus Has Fallen outperformed White House Down. It’s crazy to think it was made for less than half the cost – around $75 million, according to Box Office Mojo – and came out three months earlier! Both movies weren’t exactly critic darlings, but Olympus Has Fallen just seemed to hit a sweet spot. I think audiences were ready for something a little grittier – that throwback ’90s action vibe and the R-rating really stood out when everything else was so PG-13.
Olympus Has Fallen Won The Box-Office Battle
While both movies shared a similar premise – a White House under attack – Olympus Has Fallen performed better at the box office. Although White House Down earned over $200 million globally, its high production costs resulted in financial losses.
The action film Olympus Has Fallen was a financial success, making $170 million with a $70 million production budget. It was popular enough to launch a series, bringing back Gerard Butler for two sequels, London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen. While a fourth movie was planned, it’s currently not being actively developed.
The popular film series inspired a TV show called Paris Has Fallen, which premiered in 2024. The show featured new characters working to stop attacks in Paris and was a hit with audiences. A second season, titled Apollo Has Fallen, is planned, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Judge For Yourself Which White House Action Movie Is Best
With the initial excitement and advertising for White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen over, both movies are now available on YouTube, letting audiences decide which one is better. Does Olympus Has Fallen win with its strong cast, intense action, and serious mood, or is White House Down the preferred choice with its more playful and over-the-top style?
As a movie fan, I’ve been thinking – if you really want to see how well White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen have aged, maybe the best way is to watch them back-to-back. It’s weird, but you could even throw in the White House attack storyline from season 7 of 24 and basically have your own strange, unofficial trilogy!
