Georgina Chapman’s Triumphant Return to the Red Carpet with Adrien Brody

2017 saw the shocking revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s heinous acts against women, and as a fervent admirer, I couldn’t help but feel the impact. My beloved wife, Georgina Chapman, who runs the fashion label Marchesa, vanished from public eye for a staggering five months following this news. The grand runway show for her label was also indefinitely postponed.

It was widely believed that no celebrities would choose to wear the brand following revelations that actresses like Sienna Miller and Felicity Huffman were coerced into wearing it, a practice supported by the movie mogul’s personal investments.

It’s even more impressive now to find Chapman back in the limelight as one of the leading figures on the awards season red carpet, not just due to the fact that stars are donning her dresses once more, but also for other reasons.

A British woman, who’s a mother of two, is often seen supporting her partner, Adrien Brody, and last night, he won the BAFTA for Best Actor for “The Brutalist.” She is also being widely predicted to win the Oscar for the same performance.

In January, when he received his Golden Globe, he also expressed gratitude towards Georgina. His tribute to her “resilience” subtly acknowledged the challenging path she had taken on her road to prominence once again.

Georgina stepped back from the limelight intentionally, aiming to provide the women with ‘dignity and recognition’ they were entitled to. She referred to the peaceful periods after her former spouse’s fall as a phase for ‘grieving.’

In the year 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to spend 23 years in prison for third-degree rape and other forms of criminal sexual misconduct, which occurred with two separate women.

It wouldn’t have been surprising for Georgina to step back quietly from the spotlight, given that the weight of public scrutiny might have become overwhelming for her. However, it’s important to note that she herself hasn’t done anything wrong.

In more recent times, she’s been reappearing in society and has been spotted at prestigious events alongside famous individuals like David Beckham, Helena Christensen, and Stella McCartney.

As Adrien regains stardom following several years away from the spotlight, it’s now unfolding that she is back in a powerful Hollywood relationship – an unexpected twist that would have been hard to imagine just seven years prior.

Georgina’s beginnings  

Georgina Rose Chapman hails from Richmond, London, where she was born on April 14, 1976. Her dad established Percol, while her mom was employed by Reader’s Digest. At present, her younger sibling Edward holds the position of CEO at Marchesa.

She was born with a hip deformity and wasn’t officially diagnosed with dyslexia until she was eight years old. This unidentified learning difficulty caused her considerable distress in school, often manifesting as intense anxiety.

In her teens, Georgina modelled to pay the bills and harboured ambitions of becoming an actress.

In 2001, she completed her education at the Wimbledon School of Art and then embarked on a career in costume design for both stage productions and films.

At the age of 18, she boarded a train bound for Hull, intending to tour a drama studies college department. Unfortunately, the train encountered mechanical issues.

On that particular day, she encountered a lifelong companion in an actor yet unrecognized as David Oyelowo. Following the uproar of the scandal involving her former spouse, she chose to reside with him and his family.

Georgina crossed paths with Keren Craig for the first time when they were seventeen years old, specifically at the Chelsea College of Art and Design. In 2004, they established their own fashion brand, Marchesa.

2004 – Relationship with Harvey 

Around the same time she began Marchesa, Georgina started dating Harvey after meeting at a party. 

At the debut of the Miramax movie “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” in 2004, Renee Zellweger chose to wear clothing from a specific fashion brand.

According to The New York Times, he made contributions at opportune moments, but the exact amounts were kept confidential by the company.

At the Rome debut of “The Aviator,” Cate Blanchett donned a mini dress by Marchesa. Additionally, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, and Diane Kruger all showcased this designer’s creations on the red carpet. In fact, Marchesa was recognized as the Red Carpet Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards back in 2007.

In December of 2007, Harvey tied the knot with Georgina at his waterfront mansion in Connecticut. The exclusive guest list included big names like Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony, Cameron Diaz, Renée Zellweger, and Naomi Watts.

As reported by People magazine, they got married in a cozy winter wedding held under the night sky, culminating in a spectacular firework show.

‘Harvey looked the happiest he’s ever looked,’ said a source. ‘Georgina was absolutely glowing.’

Visitors like Lopez and Zellweger observed the spectacle unfold from spacious tents adorned with crystalline chandeliers and pine trees, while fireworks burst from a barge situated in nearby Long Island Sound.

After the 10-minute show, everyone erupted in applause. A live band played, and the celebration lasted till 1am.

The guest-list for the glamorous wedding read like a who’s who from the worlds of media to finance.

The gathering featured individuals such as Rupert Murdoch, the head of Revlon Ron Perelman, film director Quentin Tarantino, fashion icons Anna Wintour from Vogue and Graydon Carter from Vanity Fair, models Karolina Kurkova and Helena Christensen, who started showing up at Weinstein’s estate around 5pm.

2017 – Harvey Weinstein allegations come to light 

Back in October 2017, it was my world rocked when both The New York Times and The New Yorker brought forth a barrage of claims against Harvey. Among these shocking revelations were no less than three accusations of rape. As a die-hard fan, it left me utterly stunned and disillusioned.

Among them were actresses Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd. Later, he became known as a symbol for the #MeToo movement when many women spoke out about experiences of sexual misconduct.

After a few days, Georgina discloses her choice to part ways with him, labeling his behavior as inexcusable, and emphasizing that their primary concern is their kids, India and Dashiell.

She expressed deep sympathy, saying it was heartrending to think about all the women who have endured immense suffering due to these intolerable acts.

‘I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority.’

Initially, Harvey expressed that he agreed with her choice, yet expressed a hope for reestablishing their connection.

‘I am in counselling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild,’ he said.

I get it, I have a deep affection for her and our kids as well. I sincerely hope that when I recover, I’ll be able to rejoin our family once more.

Back in January 2018, it emerged that they had agreed on a divorce agreement, granting her as much as $20 million and maintaining her custody of their kids.

The kids are currently 13 and 11 years old. His three older step-siblings from his previous marriage (all girls) seem to have decided not to interact with him, however, the younger pair do spend time together.

They’ve made trips to Wende Prison in New York, as well as Bellevue Prison Hospital, also located in New York. These are the places where he is currently detained. In addition, they engage in video calls with him via Zoom.

His need for hospitalization stems from his deteriorating health condition. He relies on a wheelchair, struggles with vision loss, battles diabetes, arthritis, spinal stenosis, anemia, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease.

According to someone familiar with the situation, Weinstein remains in contact with his two children from Georgina through phone calls. He has managed to maintain a strong relationship with them, which is incredibly important to him. There’s no animosity between him and Georgina, and he wishes for their harmony to persist.

‘Their relationship is warm and friendly. They primarily discuss matters related to their children, but they don’t engage in extensive conversations beyond that.’

Initially, some women who were customers of Georgina’s fashion brand started to show signs of losing faith in it following the revelation of accusations against her concerning sexual misconduct, although she quickly divorced him afterwards.

Supporters of fashion expressed a demand that celebrities avoid the brand, arguing that the designer should have known about his spouse’s alleged mistreatment of women at the time.

When it was revealed that, as per industry sources, Harvey allegedly urged celebrities to don Marchesa dresses for the red carpet events in order to boost his wife’s fashion business, the clamor only intensified.

Harvey himself confessed that he personally suggested Renee Zellweger, a globally recognized film star then, wear a Marchesa gown for the premiere of Bridget Jones’s Diary, which she ultimately did.

At that point, fashion experts believed that the split might not be sufficient to restore the brand’s tarnished image.

According to wedding stylist Diane Lloyd Roth, she advises her brides to gather pages from magazines, and Marchesa is often one of the brands featured. Some of her clients had planned to visit Marchesa for their gowns, but now they’re feeling hesitant about it.

‘They decline the partnership. When somebody gets married, the most common query is about their wedding attire.’

A prominent Hollywood publicist, speaking anonymously to The Daily Beast, stated: “This situation is like a massive tidal wave at the moment. I believe this isn’t the end of it. I don’t think we’ve witnessed all the consequences for various individuals involved.

There’s a strong feeling of release now that it’s been revealed, yet there’s also an underlying suspicion that further truths will surface. It’s undeniably impacting all facets of the operation.

Although Georgina Chapman promptly disassociated herself from Weinstein, there’s a questionable connection between his image and her brand, which may lead many celebrities and consumers to avoid it temporarily, as Elizabeth Shobert, StyleSage’s marketing director, suggested to The Daily Beast.

One publicist told the Hollywood Reporter: ‘No star is ever going to want to wear the brand again.’

Following the events that transpired, the label had no choice but to delay its Spring Summer Preview, put collaborative projects on hold, and for the first time in years, no A-list celebrities opted to wear Marchesa designs at the Golden Globes.

I, a devoted admirer, took a step back from the limelight for a remarkable five-month hiatus, feeling it was not appropriate or considerate to attend public engagements. Moreover, I decided to postpone my upcoming Marchesa runway show due to similar reasons.

In response to a Vogue question in May 2018 regarding any suspicions about her husband’s actions, she stated unequivocally: “Not at all, never.

She commented: ‘A portion of me was incredibly innocent – it’s quite evident how innocent I was. There are times when I feel enraged, there are times when I’m puzzled, and there are times when I can hardly believe what happened.’

As a lifestyle expert, I opted against showcasing my wardrobe at this year’s awards season, as I felt it wasn’t aligned with the appropriate vibe or theme.

She stated that every woman who has experienced pain deserves both dignity and respect, and she plans to devote adequate time to this important matter. She added that this is an appropriate time for reflection and sympathy.

Nevertheless, despite some fading popularity, a dedicated group of loyal fans of the brand remained. Among this group was Scarlett Johansson, who graced the 2018 Met Gala red carpet in Marchesa.

She explained that she chose to wear Marchesa as their garments help women feel self-assured and attractive. It brings her joy to back a label conceived by two exceptionally gifted and influential female designers.

Anna Wintour publicly supported Georgina and her design label during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2018, stating, “Georgina has immense talent as a designer, and I believe it’s unfair to hold her responsible for her spouse’s actions.

It seemed very thoughtful and supportive of Scarlett to choose such an elegant dress for a public event.

2019 – Relationship with Adrien Brody

In the year 2019, Georgina entered into a romantic connection with Adrien Brody, which was her first relationship following her breakup with Harvey, the disgraced movie producer, in 2017.

A New York art enthusiast, who had recently broken up with model Lara Lieto, and she received an invitation to attend the unveiling of Helena Christensen’s swimsuit collection in Puerto Rico back in April 2019.

The connection began subtly, becoming visible to the public around early 2020. A source disclosed: “She finds him quite distinctive. To her, he’s an engaging individual who shares a profound dedication to his profession, much like her own.

In the ensuing year, they made their debut on a red carpet as a pair. As time went by, it appeared that their affection was growing stronger. Then, in 2022, they both attended the Vanity Fair Oscars party in March and the Met Gala in May.

In September 2022, during the Venice Film Festival, it was noticed that they were together. At this point, he had already relocated to Chapman’s farmhouse in upstate New York.

They reside there with their mother, the two kids they have together with Harvey, as well as a variety of pets such as horses, dogs, cats, and chickens.

This week, during an interview with Vogue, Adrien mentioned that they have a studio for painting at their countryside home. Meanwhile, Georgina shared with the magazine that when Adrien is deeply immersed in a role, he can often be found in his office, engrossed in reading, surrounded by cats.

She also mentions that acting drains him significantly due to his generous nature. He’s particularly delicate, as he wears a fine emotional layer in dealing with the world.

2023 – Marchesa’s return to the red carpet

Over the past year, Marchesa has seen a resurgence in popularity as celebrities like Amy Forsyth, Chelsea Handler, Paige Butcher, Naz Perez, Autumn Rowe, and Christina Jackson have been spotted wearing Marchesa dresses at various events.

Despite initially being supported by Harvey, the fame of Chapman’s New York label, established with schoolmate Keren Craig in 2004, appears to have regained momentum.

At the Grammys in 2022, Chelsea wore a Marchesa dress with an off-the-shoulder style. In 2023, for the Critics Choice Awards, she once again chose to wear a Marchesa design, demonstrating her ongoing fondness for this fashion label.

As the gracious hostess for the event, the actress and humorist donned several ensembles throughout the evening, yet it was her second outfit of the night that truly caught everyone’s eye – a captivating Marchesa dress in a vibrant shade of fuchsia.

However, it wasn’t just her who made that choice at the event; actress Laura Prepon also chose clothing from the same troubled fashion designer.
