George R.R. Martin deletes blog post critical of House of the Dragon, HBO issues statement
As a seasoned gamer with a heart full of Westeros and countless hours spent poring over George R.R. Martin’s masterpieces, I must admit that today’s turn of events left me feeling like a Maester navigating the treacherous waters of King’s Landing.
This afternoon, George R.R. Martin, the creator of ‘Game of Thrones’, fulfilled his pledge to share all the issues fans have been noticing with HBO’s prequel series, ‘House of the Dragon’. Concerned about alterations made in the first episode of the second season titled “A Son for a Son”, Martin expressed worry that these changes could impact the narrative as the story unfolds
Martin’s blog post didn’t contain any hostility, yet he praised the episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 and its showrunner Ryan Condal. However, there was a touch of discontent in his words. This level of criticism from a show creator who is still active on a series airing now was quite uncommon. HBO acknowledged this and issued a statement to Variety regarding the matter
There are few greater fans of George R.R. Martin and his book ‘Fire & Blood’ than the creative team on ‘House of the Dragon,’ both in production and at HBO. Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner ultimately is required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow. We believe that Ryan Condal and his team have done an extraordinary job and the millions of fans the series has amassed over the first two seasons will continue to enjoy it.
Approximately at the same moment that statement was made, Martin’s “Not a Blog” post vanished (however, you can still view our write-up here). It could be that HBO requested Martin to remove it, and he complied. Alternatively, he might have reconsidered his decision and deleted it himself. We are unaware of the specifics
It appears that Martin, in his original blog post, hinted at a significant plot twist from “Fire & Blood” which the showrunners might incorporate into season 3. He noted this twist was once included in Ryan’s outline, but it’s uncertain if it remains in the current version or not. Given the contents of the post, this revelation could potentially stir controversy among HBO executives. Although the plot twist is detailed in “Fire & Blood”, as “House of the Dragon” has deviated from its source material, there’s a possibility that HBO viewed it as a spoiler and requested Martin to remove the post
) Regarding my speculation: We don’t have all the facts, so Martin might hesitate before revealing more after this small controversy. Moving on to “House of the Dragon” season 3, it’s currently being developed; you can anticipate its release on HBO and Max around 2026
