George Michael’s Secret £50k Gift to Backing Singer During Marriage Crisis Revealed!

It has been disclosed that during a time of her marital crisis with an ’80s pop star, one of George Michael’s backup singers received an astonishing £50,000 as a gift from him.

It wasn’t until his death on Christmas Day in 2016 that numerous untold tales of his generous, charitable actions surfaced about the former member of Wham!.

53-year-old musician, who passed away at his Goring-on-Thames residence in Oxfordshire, was found to have generously given substantial amounts to both charitable organizations and individuals in need, moved by their hardships.

On the other hand, George, known for the hit “Careless Whisper,” was equally generous towards those he held dear. He aided his backup singer Shirley Lewis when her relationship with Bros star Luke Goss started to falter.

In an interview with The Mirror, Shirley shared that during her marital struggles, she was concerned about finding a place to live for herself and her young daughter. To gather some urgently required funds, she sold her watch for £5,000.

However, when Shirley’s money-filled envelope mysteriously disappeared, leaving her distraught, it was George who stepped up to help her out generously by extending a substantial offer.

She shared: ‘I was speaking with George on the phone when, unexpectedly, I started crying. He inquired about my well-being and I disclosed that my husband and I were experiencing a difficult time, and I had also lost some money. In response, he mentioned he would send me some funds and ended the call. The following day, I found £50,000 deposited into my account!’

She shared that she had phoned him the following day and explained that she wouldn’t accept his money. However, compassionate George was firm and instead assured her not to be concerned about it.

Shirley split with Bros’ Luke in 2017 after 33 years together.

In a subsequent statement, Shirley, who had worked closely with the celebrity for three decades, revealed that George subsequently asked her to join him on tour. However, Shirley made it clear to the star that she would only accept the offer if her weekly salary was lowered and George handled the remaining amount – an invitation that the performer declined.

She shared: ‘When he mentioned he wouldn’t be doing that, I informed him I wouldn’t attend. In response, he remarked, “You can really be a nuisance.” That was the last we exchanged words on the matter – it never came up again. He was incredibly kind-hearted.’

At the same time, George stepped in to help Jo Garland, his fellow longtime backup singer. She had been deeply upset when she withdrew three months’ rent from her savings account in cash to secure an apartment, but the money mysteriously disappeared.

Jo remembered: ‘I was bawling my heart out in the studio when George entered, asking what on earth had transpired. He replied tenderly, “Don’t fret about it, dear.” Leaving and returning with his own funds, he said, “Let’s just hope whoever found your envelope truly had a use for it.” In that moment, he seemed like our guiding angel.’

Jay Henry, one of George’s backup singers, pointed out that despite being a popstar, George disliked the limelight aspect of his career. Instead, his generous actions served as a means for him to appreciate and enjoy his celebrity status.

The threesome will shortly embark on a tour across the UK, performing George’s songs to honor his legacy.

After his sad passing, it was revealed that George had performed numerous kind deeds anonymously. One such act that stood out was giving a significant amount of money, roughly equivalent to thousands of pounds, to a participant on the game show ‘Deal Or No Deal’ for her in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

On the day after Michael’s passing on December 25, 2016, TV host Richard Osman first disclosed a £15,000 donation.

I’m sharing an amazing act of kindness that I recently learned about. Osman shared that a compassionate singer reached out to a contestant who appeared on Channel 4’s Deal or No Deal. This woman had come up just short in her quest for a life-changing sum, which was intended for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment. However, the singer stepped in and provided her with the funds she needed, demonstrating an exceptional act of empathy and generosity.

On the show, Osman, one of the producers, shared on Twitter: ‘A contestant from “Deal or No Deal” revealed she required £15k for infertility treatments. The following day, George Michael anonymously donated the sum of £15k to her.’

Another individual who benefited from this situation was Jo Maidment, who had been turned down for fertility treatment in 2010 due to her partner having a child previously. However, George Michael contacted the show later on and expressed interest in becoming part of the solution.

After giving birth to her daughter Betsy in 2012, the mother-of-two later shared that the famous star had initially wished to stay hidden. However, following the birth, he unveiled his identity by sending a massive bouquet of flowers and a card to her anonymously.

The message said: ‘Congratulations to you both, with much affection for Betsy. Sincerely, Michelle and George Michael (or simply, anonymously).’

Previously, it had been shared that the Personal Assistant of an unidentified wealthy entrepreneur made a call to the program to offer the expense of medical treatment, enabling a woman to give birth to the child she desired.

As a lifestyle advisor, I can empathize with the experience of a fellow artist whose initial In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) attempt ended in a miscarriage. A heartfelt bouquet graced my doorstep during that challenging time, yet the identity of this secret admirer remained shrouded in mystery.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’ve found myself in a similar situation – when embarking on a journey that requires a financial investment beyond my initial plan, I had to save diligently. In my case, it was for a second attempt at IVF, which was made possible by the frozen eggs from my first round, courtesy of George.

It wasn’t until their daughter Betsy was already born that they found out who the anonymous donor was.

In 2017, Jo reminisced about an incident: “A few days after bringing Betsy home, our house was filled with cards, flowers, and a large bouquet arrived. We read the accompanying card numerous times, trying to convince ourselves that what it said was true.

After the passing of George Michael, other social media users shared stories of how he unexpectedly settled the financial debts of complete strangers.

One individual shared that they had listened to a worried woman in a coffee shop talk about her money troubles, then proceeded to write a check for £25,000 and asked the server to pass it on to her.

The employee was apparently told to hand over the check only after the celebrity had departed.

Journalist Sali Hughes previously penned an article mentioning a celebrity, whom they had collaborated with, giving a bartender £5k due to her being a struggling student nurse. This celebrity turned out to be George Michael.
