George Lucas surprises Lucasfilm's Doug Chiang at the Concept Art Awards

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia, I can confidently say that Doug Chiang is not just another artist, but a Star Wars titan whose influence has left an indelible mark on the galaxy far, far away. Having grown up admiring his work in the original trilogy’s art book, The Art of Star Wars, it’s humbling to see him receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Concept Art Awards.

Over the weekend, the 2024 Concept Art Awards unfolded at LightBox Expo. Notably, Douglas Chiang from Lucasfilm received the Lifetime Achievement Award. In an unexpected turn during the event, a well-known figure left many attendees in awe.

Krystina Arielle, the host of Star Wars: The High Republic Show, shared on Twitter that George Lucas privately conveyed a heartfelt message to Chiang before presenting him with an award. Although it’s difficult to make out the specific words, Lucas’ sense of pride shines through in his voice.

Through her Tweet, Arielle describes Chiang as an exceptional and unmatched “Star Wars titan,” a fitting title indeed for him. The impact of Star Wars that we see today is greatly owed to Chiang’s influence. Just as crucial to the Star Wars universe as other renowned artists such as Ralph McQuarrie, Chiang plays an equally significant role.

Currently, Doug Chiang serves as Vice President and Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm, a role that was previously held by Dave Filoni. Earlier in his career, he held the position of Chief Creative Officer within the same company. His professional journey commenced with Star Wars, particularly through the 1979 art book titled “The Art of Star Wars“, which inspired him to pursue a path in this industry.

Following his tenure as a creative director at Industrial Lights and Magic, where he contributed to blockbusters like “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”, Chiang was employed by Lucasfilm. In Lucasfilm, he headed their art department, holding roles such as design director, visual effects production designer, and concept design supervisor for “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones”. Concurrently, during this period, he was one of the principal designers involved in the multimedia project “Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire”.

He stepped away from Lucasfilm for a time, creating his own studios and working on other projects. However, Chiang would return to Star Wars for the sequel trilogy. He served as a concept artist for The Force Awakens, production designer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and was the head of design for both Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Rise of Skywalker. He also jumped into Star Wars TV as the design supervisor for The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi. You can also find him making the occasional cameo in the series as well.

As a fellow gamer and admirer of Star Wars artistry, I can’t help but feel a sense of joy and respect when I see Doug Chiang being honored for his exceptional work. His name resonates with greatness in the realm of Star Wars, and his contributions are nothing short of legendary.
