George Lucas finally explains long-running Yoda mystery

George Lucas, the mind behind Star Wars, has at last unveiled the reason behind the unique way Jedi Master Yoda communicates.

Initially showing up in the 1980 film “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,” the unique speaking style of the green-skinned Jedi character was previously open to various interpretations.

At the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival, George Lucas made an appearance for a special 45th-anniversary screening of The Empire Strikes Back. It was during this event that he revealed the cause behind Yoda’s peculiar speech pattern (as reported by Variety)).

Host and moderator Ben Mankiewicz enquired about the reason behind Yoda’s backward speech, to which George Lucas responded that this unique trait was intended to capture viewers’ full attention and focus on the character.

He pointed out that when someone communicates in standard English, their audience might not pay as much attention. However, if the person has an accent or speaks in a way that is difficult to comprehend, people tend to focus more intently on what they are saying.

He essentially served as the film’s philosophical guide. It was crucial for me to devise a method to capture their attention, particularly that of 12-year-olds, he noted, ultimately resolving a mystery that had puzzled people for decades.

Later on, when asked about his preference between Yoda and Lando Calrissian in the sequel, Lucas dodged the question by comparing it to this situation: “If you have twelve children, which one do you favor the most?

In the same interview, the creator of “Star Wars” discussed his approach to crafting the original trilogy. He mentioned that the initial script he penned was overly extensive, prompting him to divide it into three separate parts.

Lucas explained, “My writing resembles a basic plan rather than a detailed narrative. When I finished writing the script for Star Wars, it consisted of 130 to 180 pages. So, I divided it into three sections and decided to concentrate on the first one since we may not have enough funds to produce the entire project at once.

You can stream “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and the entire Skywalker Saga on Disney+. Additionally, you can purchase the movie on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K versions.
