George Clooney was disappointed in new movie’s streaming release

As a seasoned gamer who’s witnessed countless cinematic twists and turns, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sympathy for George Clooney regarding the streaming release of “Wolfs”. It’s like when you’re on the final boss level in your favorite game, only to find out that the developer has decided to patch it into an easy mode.

George Clooney has shared his disappointment at new movie Wolfs’ streaming release.

The actor is back working alongside Brad Pitt from “Ocean’s Eleven” in a humorous crime drama where they portray crooked mediators compelled to collaborate because they find out they were both hired for the same task.

Clooney and Pitt both appeared at Venice Film Festival this week for Wolfs’ world premiere.

At a press event during the festival, Clooney expressed his disappointment that Apple altered their plan for a broader worldwide cinema launch. Consequently, the film “Wolves” will now have a limited cinematic release in the U.S. on September 20, followed by its global premiere on Apple TV+ a week after (on September 27).

He shared with reporters, as reported by Deadline, that they had indeed wished for its release, but encountered some obstacles during the process. Such setbacks are common, he added, recalling an instance from his work on “Boys in the Boat.” Initially produced for MGM, it ultimately ended up on Amazon’s platform, and surprisingly, there was no foreign distribution at all.

He went on to say, “We’re still working on some parts of this,” and admitted, “Certainly, it’s disappointing.”

While many individuals will watch the movie in several theaters, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t secure a wider release, although having a release in hundreds of theaters is still quite substantial.

It was previously announced in December 2023 that Sony secured worldwide cinema distribution rights for the Apple Original Films movie “Wolfs.” But just last month, it became clear that Apple is instead opting for a global streaming debut for the film, with only a restricted cinema release planned.

In addition, August witnessed Apple entering into an agreement with the movie’s director, Jon Watts, for him to script, direct, and produce a follow-up to “Wolves” starring the main characters.

In that moment, the company stated: “By premiering the film in cinemas prior to its release on Apple TV+, we can offer viewers the best of both experiences. We look forward to witnessing the audience’s reaction as we embark on creating the sequel with Jon.”

Besides Clooney and Pitt, the cast of Wolfs also includes Amy Ryan from Only Murders in the Building, Austin Abrams who is known for The Walking Dead, and Poorna Jagannathan, a renowned actress from Never Have I Ever.

Alongside Ryan and Abrams, Wolfs’ world debut in Venice was also graced by their presence. Unfortunately, during this time, Director Watts had to forgo the event due to contracting COVID-19, as confirmed by Clooney, who mentioned that Watts was taking rest instead.

Initial responses to the film have varied, yet following its first public viewing, it earned a four-minute long standing ovation from spectators.

Wolfs will be released globally on September 27, streaming on Apple TV+.
