George Clooney makes his long-awaited Super Bowl ad debut as he vows to end food service fees

George Clooney has officially entered the Super Bowl ad arena.

The Academy Award-winning actor, age 64, will appear in Grubhub’s first Super Bowl commercial on Sunday. The ad is scheduled to air during the third quarter of the game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

This Super Bowl ad, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is the first national commercial George Clooney has appeared in.

The commercial takes place in a lavish castle, where elegantly dressed guests are enjoying a dinner party… but instead of fancy cuisine, they’re eating takeout food.

The mood, however, abruptly shifts when the host announces the final course: the fees.

A wave of surprise and disapproval went through the room when guests learned they would be required to pay delivery and service fees.

“And now, let’s talk about the fees,” one of the men announced, causing everyone to react with alarm.

‘Oh no,’ another dinner guest responds as others scrambled to make excuses why they couldn’t.

The standoff ends when Clooney’s character steps in and confidently makes the campaign’s main point: Grubhub will cover all the fees.

The guests then began repeating the line like a strange chant – ‘Grubhub will eat the fees… Grubhub will eat the fees…’ – before Clooney explained it simply: there are no delivery fees, no service fees, and no fees at all on orders over $50.

George Clooney said he was excited when he learned Yorgos Lanthimos, one of his favorite directors, was directing a Super Bowl commercial for Grubhub and asked him to participate, according to People magazine.

Grubhub announced in a press release, as reported by People, that this change is intended to be a lasting perk for customers, not just a temporary offer.

The company is working to fix a major problem for people who order food online: high fees. They point out that these fees often average about $13 on orders over $50 when using other delivery apps.

For Clooney, that message immediately clicked.

‘It’s a great way to tell people that they agree the fees are annoying,’ he says simply.

Even though it was a short commercial, Clooney says the experience of filming it felt just like being on set for one of Lanthimos’ movies.

He says absolutely nothing felt different. The director approaches a short commercial exactly like he does a full-length movie. Even in this amazing castle setting, working with great actors, he used the same camera operator he always does and maintained his consistent, unique vision throughout the entire project.

The actor says the final ad felt like a miniature, two-minute film by Yorgos Lanthimos, perfectly crafted for a Super Bowl spot.

Yorgos Lanthimos is the acclaimed director known for his unique films, including Dogtooth (2009), The Lobster (2015), The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and the upcoming Bugonia (2025). He has received Oscar nominations for his work.

In December, Clooney signed a lucrative deal with US–based food delivery service Grubhub.

When the news of the collaboration was announced, he was seen filming a commercial for the company at North Mymms Park, a historic Elizabethan estate located near Hatfield in Hertfordshire.

Clooney has a Thameside home with lawyer wife Amal in Sonning, Berkshire.
