George Clooney denies claims he and Brad Pitt were paid $35million for their movie Wolfs: 'It's bad if that's what people think'

As a die-hard fan who’s been following George Clooney‘s career since his ER days, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions reading about the recent events surrounding his latest film, The Wolf. On one hand, I’m thrilled to see him and Brad Pitt reuniting on screen after so many years, reminiscing their Ocean’s Eleven glory days. On the other, I’m disheartened to hear about the less-than-stellar reviews the movie has been receiving.

George Clooney is countering claims that he and his Wolf co-star Brad Pitt received an enormous paycheck for the movie, which was screened at the Venice Film Festival this past Sunday.

It was reported last week by The New York Times that each member of the Ocean’s Eleven cast earned more than $35 million for their performances in Jon Watts’ action-comedy film.

Addressing the report during a press conference at the Wolfs premiere, Clooney brought up the alleged figures.

“He started by saying the article was intriguing, and it seems that the figure reported for our earnings was significantly lower than the actual amount – by a staggering number in the tens of millions.”

I’m just pointing this out because it could be damaging to our field if such low salaries are perceived as the norm.

He added: ‘I think that’s terrible, it’ll make it impossible to make films.’

Clooney explained that when an agreement for the movie’s theatrical distribution didn’t work out, leading to a screening in only around 200 theaters, both he and Pitt chose to give back parts of their earnings.

‘Yes, we wanted it to be released [in theaters]. We’ve had some bumps along the way, that happens,’ he explained.

In my work on ‘The Boys in the Boat’, it was initially produced by MGM, but unexpectedly, it was distributed by Amazon instead, with no international distribution whatsoever, which came as quite a shock.

‘There are elements of this that we are figuring out. You guys are all in this too. We’re all in this industry and we’re trying to find our way post-COVID and everything else, and so there’s some bumps along the way.

George Clooney expressed again his dismay over the movie’s limited launch, yet he admitted it will still capture a vast viewership. While a wider release would have been ideal, he understands it won’t be possible.

In the movie, this is the first occasion since 2008’s Burn After Reading where Clooney and Pitt appear together on screen.

In their latest venture, the renowned pair take on roles as trouble-shooters, entrusted with concealing illegal activities. However, they unwillingly join forces when they’re both given the same assignment.

At the red carpet event, Clooney pondered over their enduring professional and personal bond with Pitt.

‘There’s nothing good about it,’ he joked to People. ‘It’s all a disaster.’

On a more serious note, George added, ‘It’s fun to work with people you know really well.’

Currently, the latest buddy-cop movie is receiving harsh criticism from critics. They’ve labeled it a “disorganized” flop with only one star, and described it as an unbearably poor comedy.

On September 20, the Apple TV+ movie titled “Wolfs,” valued at $200 million, will premiere in cinemas. This film features the two stars of Ocean’s Eleven working together, albeit reluctantly, as they address an issue that surfaces when a stern District Attorney finds herself in a tricky situation after waking up next to a deceased 20-something who was her one-night companion.

However, detractors argue that the movie, boasting an unprecedented budget for any streaming production, fails to impress. IGN’s Siddhant Adlakha, in particular, has harshly criticized it as reminiscent of a well-funded student film made by a privileged teen who’s been nourished on an early diet of Guy Ritchie films.

Xan Brooks from The Guardian commented that director Jon Watts might find himself laughing last as he earned a fortune from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy, since his work resembles the viral meme featuring two Spider-Men pointing at each other.

According to The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin, the film was labeled as ‘disorganized,’ and in his review, he stated: ‘George Clooney has expressed dissatisfaction about Quentin Tarantino not viewing him as a leading actor. If more films like this are produced, Clooney will soon validate Tarantino’s perspective.’

Critics, including him, suggest that the movie’s success was primarily due to Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s fame, as the storyline and script were reportedly mediocre, offering minimal humor or emotional depth.

Barry Levitt from The Daily Beast posits that the humor revolves around both characters’ mutual unwillingness to collaborate with each other.

In a car ride similar to that with Clooney and Pitt in ‘Wolf,’ Levitt describes an endless stream of excitement akin to hearing your children repeatedly ask, “Are we there yet?” for what seems like forever.

Instead of constantly reusing the same joke, it seems as though this character keeps trying new twists, but unfortunately for those listening, they all seem to be variations on a single punchline. Even when it appears that they might be ready for something new, they persist in telling the same joke yet again.
