'George A. Romero's Resident Evil' Documentary to Reveal the Story Behind the Resident Evil Movie That Never Was in January 2025

As a die-hard fan of the genre that George A. Romero pioneered, I am beyond excited for “George A. Romero’s Resident Evil” documentary. The anticipation is palpable, like the suspenseful build-up to a classic zombie ambush. I remember the thrill of his original movies, which not only scared the living daylights out of me but also inspired the very essence of the Resident Evil series.

In January 2025, a documentary titled “George A. Romero’s Unmade Resident Evil” is set to release. This work, penned by co-writer and director Brandon Sailsbury, will reveal the behind-the-scenes story of the Resident Evil movie that never got made. The film includes fresh interviews with key personnel who were present during the project’s conception, shedding light on the factors leading to its eventual shelving.

George Romero is credited for creating contemporary horror and the modern concept of zombies, leading up to the Resident Evil series, according to Salisbury’s statement to Bloody Disgusting. It’s an honor for me to share with fans the untold tale behind his most significant unrealized project, a tribute to the man who ignited my passion for filmmaking. I hope fans will appreciate this ultimate journey into survival horror.

In a natural and easy-to-read paraphrase, George A. Romero, the pioneer of zombie movies, significantly influenced the original “Resident Evil” series and its subsequent sequels. Interestingly, in 1998, Romero even directed a commercial for “Resident Evil 2”. Given his substantial contribution to the franchise, it seemed only fitting that he would adapt “Resident Evil” himself. Remarkably, in 1998, Romero actually finished writing a screenplay for this adaptation.

Initially, Capcom had a different script in mind for the Resident Evil movies, but they opted against it, leading to the creation of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil films featuring Milla Jovovich. Regrettably, George A. Romero passed away in 2017 at the age of 77, meaning his vision for Resident Evil will remain unrealized. However, a documentary titled “George A. Romero’s Resident Evil” will be released from January 7, 2025, offering us the closest glimpse into what could have been.
