The first day of the competition saw a surprising win for Gentle Mates, who easily defeated EDG. However, XLG wasn’t as fortunate and lost to NRG.
Gentle Mates surprised everyone at the start of VALORANT Masters Santiago by easily defeating EDward Gaming. Later, Xi Lai Gaming couldn’t challenge the current champions, NRG, and fell into the losers’ bracket.
The power of the Chilean crowd
The incredible energy of the Chilean fans was a highlight of the event. Patryk “starxo” Kopczyński from Gentle Mates posted on X about how the enthusiastic and positive crowd made the first day of VALORANT Masters Santiago a truly memorable experience.
The crowd was consistently energetic throughout the games. Despite being newcomers on the international stage, Gentle Mates received unwavering support from their fans, who cheered enthusiastically with every move. One fan described it on X as “epic.” The players and the crowd fed off each other’s energy, creating an electric atmosphere that was felt by everyone, both in the arena and watching from home.
Gentle Mates vs. EDG: The last one standing
Two of the best players, EDG’s Zheng “ZmjjKK” Yongkang and M8’s Martin “marteen” Pátek, faced off in a highly anticipated match. Both players are known for incredible skill and performing well under pressure, and their performance exceeded all expectations, creating an electric atmosphere.
Despite being newcomers to the international stage, Gentle Mates received a lot of attention, but EDG remained competitive even while behind. On the Haven map, EDG narrowed the gap, but ultimately couldn’t secure a win. In the second match, although the first half was fairly even, EDG struggled and Gentle Mates dominated, winning seven rounds straight.
During the press conference, Coach Yoon Eu-teum, known as “Autumn,” acknowledged the team’s current weaknesses, which have been reflected in their recent game results. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability and willingness to improve.
He also explained that the key to their victory over Gentle Mates was playing with confidence and taking the initiative. While acknowledging Gentle Mates’ skill and strong attacking power, he emphasized his team’s belief in their own abilities. They concentrated on aggressively taking control of the map, specifically Haven, believing that doing so would lead to overall game control.
Are we witnessing the comeback of European strength?
An easy start for NRG
NRG defeated Xi Lai Gaming convincingly, marking a difficult beginning for Chinese teams in the tournament. NRG, the current champions, won the first match easily, with Georgio “keiko” Sanassy demonstrating his skill and experience to guide his team to victory.
XLG played better in the second game, but it wasn’t enough for them to win the series.
G2 Esports and Paper Rex will face off in a highly anticipated match on March 1st, with T1 and Team Liquid battling it out afterward. Fans can tune in to the action on the official VALORANT Esports Twitch and YouTube channels.
