Genshin Impact actor on why they’re calling out Hoyoverse

As a passionate fan and someone who has experienced the disappointment and frustration of seeing my cultural background misrepresented in popular media, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the ongoing issues with the portrayal of ethnicities in “Genshin Impact.” The recent revelation that English-language voice actors are speaking out against the game for instances of colorism is a clear indication that Hoyoverse needs to take responsibility and make significant changes.

In recent weeks, the Genshin Impact community has expressed concerns over the portrayal of certain character’s skin tones. Now, one of the English language voice actors has joined in the criticism, accusing the game of exhibiting “colorism.”

On July 13, social media platforms such as X and TikTok saw backlash from fans after Hoyoverse unveiled a teaser trailer for Natlan, a new game region inspired by pre-Columbian Latin America and West Africa. The trailer featured characters with light or white skin, sparking criticism over the representation in the game. Several English-language voice actors have since joined the conversation, calling on Hoyoverse to acknowledge and address this issue. One such voice actor shared their reasons for speaking out with TopMob anonymously due to potential repercussions from the company.

As someone who comes from a rich cultural background, I can attest to the fact that when an issue touches upon our deep-rooted traditions and beliefs, it leaves an indelible mark. One such example that hits close to home is the appropriation of ethnic gods or sacred symbols. The pain and offense this brings about are not easily concealed. It’s almost like a raw nerve being touched repeatedly, leaving us feeling vulnerable and disrespected. This level of misrepresentation is so egregious that it becomes glaringly obvious to those of us who hold these cultural values dear.

After launching Genshin Impact by Hoyoverse in 2020, the development team has introduced numerous areas inspired by various cultures into the game. However, some critics have expressed concerns that these cultural depictions may lean heavily on stereotypes. For instance, Inazuma, inhabited by samurai, and Sumeru with its shrouded bazaars, have been points of contention.

There have been ongoing criticisms about how Genshin Impact‘s representation of different peoples and cultures is portrayed. However, these criticisms escalated significantly after the introduction of Sumeru in 2022. Fans felt that certain aspects of Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) cultures were being oversimplified or stereotyped.

The voice actor regrets not being more attuned to these concerns during the Sumeru launch. Authentic and respectful portrayal of SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) culture in video games, including popular ones like this one, is sorely missing. Many of my SWANA friends lament the meager selection of roles that reflect their heritage, and express disappointment over the frequent use of offensive stereotypes.

Based on my personal experiences and interactions with the Natlan community, I’ve come to realize that there have been concerns regarding representation issues that surfaced not long after I publicly expressed my views about the company. I am thankful for the vigilance and accountability demonstrated by the fanbase in bringing these matters to my attention. However, as someone who has witnessed the disappointing patterns of this company firsthand, I find it disheartening that these issues continue to persist despite efforts to address them.

Voice actors serve as a bridge between Hoyoverse and the dedicated fan base of the game. Although they aren’t direct employees of Hoyoverse but rather freelance contractors, their role is pivotal as they represent the characters in a more personal and relatable way for fans. Interacting with fans at conventions, Twitch streams, and social media platforms, voice actors often share insights and create connections that deepen the fan experience. The actor interviewed by TopMob emphasized the significance of communication in this role.

Using a platform to speak out means giving a voice to those who may not have one, assuring them that they are supported and will be heard when they feel unable to express themselves. A platform holds no value if it isn’t used to make a positive impact. People often assume that individuals from underrepresented groups should conform and remain passive. They expect us to be meek and obedient.

As a passionate fan of the entertainment industry and a strong advocate for representation, I’ve come across this perspective from some actors: When people of color express themselves with enthusiasm or passion, it can be perceived as “too much” or “egregious” by some. And unfortunately, there are those who might expect marginalized communities to “quiet down.” However, I firmly believe that representation matters, especially in massively popular video games like Genshin Impact. When we see ourselves reflected on the screen, it validates our existence and helps us feel seen and heard within the larger cultural narrative.

“Every nation experiences the impact of these matters. Surprisingly, colorism is more prevalent than many realize. Even if our influence as voice actors fails to bring about change, it’s important that our concerns have been acknowledged,” they expressed.

Actors who didn’t know about the concerns surrounding specific character roles haven’t intentionally caused harm, according to one actor. They encourage fans not to target these actors for criticism. However, they hope that these actors will join the conversation and support those raising issues like colorism in gaming.

In the year 2024, let’s work towards greater unity among us in the entertainment industry. The importance of upholding values and principles cannot be overstated. Our collective strength lies in standing together.

A Hoyoverse spokesperson responded to TopMob’s query for information, stating that currently, there is no new news or updates from the company to be shared.
