As a lifestyle expert with decades of personal and professional experience, I can empathize with Cameron Mathison and his wife Vanessa as they navigate through their separation. Marriage is a complex journey filled with highs and lows, and it’s essential to prioritize understanding, patience, and love during challenging times.

On a surprising note, actor Cameron Mathison, known for his role on General Hospital, stunned his followers on Wednesday by disclosing that he and his wife Vanessa Arevalo have parted ways after being together for 22 years.

Recently, I had the opportunity to delve into an exclusive interview that Mathison conducted just days prior to the announcement of their separation. This insightful conversation offers a glimpse into the thoughts and feelings that were swirling within Vanessa in the days leading up to this significant life event.

The 54-year-old actor, who has portrayed Drew Cain on General Hospital since 2021, revealed that Vanessa, aged 57, had been going through a ‘personal discovery period.’ During an interview with Us Weekly on July 24th, he shared this information.

He expressed that this feels like the beginning of a fresh page in everyone’s lives as they navigate through it all. While discussing his Game Show Network series Beat The Bridge, he added that she is currently in a self-discovery phase, engaging in numerous exciting activities for herself.

Cameron observed that Vanessa was employing this fresh period of self-discovery to master the bass, and he expressed his approval, stating she seemed to be as active as in her modeling years, traveling and engaging in various activities, and he wholeheartedly supported her endeavors.

‘And yeah, we’re just trying to figure it all out,’ he added.

The soap actor mentioned that they were deeply appreciating one another, and they were making an effort to prioritize their partners’ needs, showing genuine concern for them instead.

He shared that it brings immense joy to understand and respect their preferences, passions, and aversions, as well as engage with them by asking questions and actively listening. This not only benefits them within the relationship but also brings satisfaction to us.

He mentioned that showing affection towards others could represent a ‘wonderful approach to life,’ yet he cautioned that maintaining this perspective might become challenging due to his work commitments and various tasks that often occupied his time.

He was expressing his recent perspective, saying, ‘Caring can occur within your spouse or children, at work with colleagues, among friends, even with strangers. This is my approach to life. When caring is present in a relationship, I believe that’s the optimal situation.’

Cameron and Vanessa announced their impending divorce in a statement posted to Instagram.

“Having been married for 22 years, we’ve chosen to move forward separately, a decision that isn’t easy. As we embark on this next phase of our lives, we do so with enduring affection, goodwill, and respect towards each other. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the beautiful moments we experienced together.”

We’ve always placed great importance on our kids, and we’ll consistently prioritize them in the future. Our affection and dedication towards them is something we’ll always cherish together.

“Our friendship continues, and we hope the same happiness for you. We deeply value your understanding and respect for our family’s need for privacy as we navigate through these changes.”

The pair share two children: son Lucas, 21, and daughter Leila, 18.

On July 27, 2002, they got married, following a proposal by the then-star of All My Children, Cameron, in Vail, Colorado.

In 1998, they initially crossed paths while both were modeling in New York City. Their relationship blossomed the next year.

Cameron previously played Ryan Lavery on All My Children from 1998–2011.

In the year 2022, Vanessa made a special appearance on General Hospital playing the role of Mia, a professional coach, across three separate episodes.

She told ET at the time: ‘This was an absolute dream come true.’

Cameron remarked, ‘Both of us felt jittery. I felt anxious. I could sense that Vanessa was also feeling apprehensive… and my anxiety began to escalate further.’

Speaking about our relationship, he mentioned that we will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary this summer. He admitted that it hasn’t always been easy; in fact, the initial five years were quite challenging.

Navigating those difficult periods and having the privilege of calling Vanessa my dearest friend, experiencing each moment with her has surpassed any expectations I had about what marriage might mean to me. It turned out to be more wonderful than I could have ever dreamt.

The split comes five years after Cameron revealed he was battling kidney cancer.

On September 9, 2019, Mathison revealed that he had been diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer known as renal cell carcinoma. The following month, he underwent surgical procedures to have the tumor removed.

He was later declared deemed free of cancer.

Renal cell carcinoma is a rare condition, but it is the most common form of the disease to strike adults.
