'General Hospital' actor Chad Duell leaving ABC soap opera after 14-year stint

As a seasoned movie-goer who’s seen more soaps than I can count on one hand, I must say that Chad Duell’s departure from “General Hospital” feels like a chapter closing in the grand book of daytime drama. With a 14-year stint under his belt as Michael Corinthos III, Duell has become an integral part of the Port Charles family, much like a favorite character in a long-running series that you just can’t imagine without.

Chad Duell is signing himself out of “General Hospital.”

The Daytime Emmy-winning soap star said Saturday that he’s leaving the Port Charles-set daytime drama after a 14-year stint. Duell debuted on the long-running ABC series in 2010 as Michael Corinthos III, the adoptive son of mob boss Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard).

On Instagram, the actor shared that after a long, wonderful run with General Hospital, he’s chosen to take a step back from the show. It wasn’t an effortless choice for him, but it seems fitting at this stage in his life. He is profoundly thankful to executive producer Frank Valentini, the cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who have been like family to him during this incredible adventure.

37-year-old Duell, who received his Emmy award for Best Supporting Actor in 2015, additionally expressed gratitude to the dedicated fans of the show for their “steadfast support” and allowing the character Michael Corinthos to become a significant part of their lives.

Your affection and support have been priceless to me,” he noted, posting a group picture. “It’s not farewell, it’s just until we meet again.

The character portrayed by actor Robert Adamson on “The Young and the Restless” is named Duell, who was introduced on screen in 1997. Since his birth, he has been at the heart of an ongoing custody dispute due to his unique lineage, being a blend of the Quartermaine and Corinthos families. Initially, Dylan Cash represented a younger version of Michael from 2002 until 2008, while Drew Garrett temporarily played a teenage Duell in 2009. After Garrett’s departure from the show in 2010, Adamson took over the role as the primary actor portraying Duell. In 2022 and earlier this year, there was a brief switch when another actor, Robert Adamson, played the part due to scheduling conflicts.

Frank Valentini, the executive producer, expressed sadness in a tweet about Duell’s departure, looking back on his time with the series and revealing the choice not to recast his character. Moreover, he suggested that Duell’s last episode will be broadcast in 2025.

“I have loved working with Chad over the years and wish him nothing but the best. He is a terrific actor and will be missed by everyone at #GH,” Valentini wrote Saturday on X, adding, “There are no plans to recast his role at this time, but you never know in daytime. I can promise a great story for Michael and his family when Chad exits in the new year.”

Duell’s fellow actors expressed their views in the Instagram comments, offering both praise and criticism at the same time.

Dom Zamprogna, who departed the soap opera in 2018 and subsequently returned in 2020, posted: ‘I didn’t write this for you… Just joking. I adore you, Cheddar.’

Cameron Mathison, known for his roles in “General Hospital” and its spinoff “All My Children”, penned down, “I love you, my brother.

Sofia Mattsson, the actress who portrays Sasha Gilmore on “General Hospital,” expressed her feelings by saying, “Oh, you’ll be greatly missed!!! Can’t wait to find out what comes next!

“Still mad !! But I adore you !!!” Carly Corinthos actor Laura Wright added.

“Love you, Chad!!!!” wrote Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow Corinthos.

Scarlett Fernandez, portraying Charlotte Cassadine, expressed, “We’ll really miss you! You were consistently one of the kindest and most entertaining individuals around here!

On Monday, ABC’s representatives failed to provide additional comments when asked by The Times.

General Hospital,” originally created by Doris and Frank Hursley in 1963, remains the longest-running scripted drama and American soap opera currently being produced. It recently celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. The series reached a milestone with its 15,000th episode in June 2022. Now, it’s the only soap opera left on the broadcast network as all of its spinoffs have concluded, with “GH” incorporating many characters from these shows.

Back in 2011, “All My Children” ceased broadcasting on television, and a year later, “One Life to Live” followed suit in 2012. However, both series have made a comeback online since then.
