Gene Hackman’s Dog Likely Died of Dehydration and Starvation, Report Says
In Santa Fe, New Mexico, a postmortem investigation into the deceased dog discovered alongside actor Gene Hackman and his wife at their residence suggests that the dog’s death was probably due to dehydration and malnutrition.
According to a report acquired by The Associated Press from the Santa Fe County animal control agency, the document describes some degree of mummification. Despite the body’s extensive decomposition, which might conceal alterations within the organs, there was no indication of any infectious illness, injury, or poisoning that could have caused the death.
The report noted that the dog’s stomach was mostly empty except for small amounts of hair and bile.
Among their three pets, the mixed-breed Kelpie dog named Zinna was one of them. Sadly, Zinna was discovered deceased in a crate within a bathroom storage area, close to where Betsy Arakawa’s body was found; fortunately, the other two dogs lived on.
Last week, it was confirmed that Hackman passed away due to heart disease and complications from Alzheimer’s disease, approximately a week after his wife succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome – a rare illness spread by rodents. In the late stages of Alzheimer’s, it seems that Hackman was unaware of his wife’s death.
In the entranceway of the house, Hackman was discovered, while Arakawa’s body was found inside a bathroom. Remarkably, their bodies were in the process of decomposition with some signs of mummification, a result of their physique and Santa Fe’s exceptionally dry climate at an altitude of around 7,200 feet (2,200 meters).
Joey Padilla, proprietor of Santa Fe Tails pet care center, shared that Zinnia transitioned from a formerly homeless shelter dog into an extraordinary companion who was constantly by Arakawa’s side.
Originating from Hawaii, Arakawa pursued a career as a concert pianist, furthering his education at the University of Southern California. In the mid-1980s, he crossed paths with Hackman while both were employed at a fitness center in California.
Legendary actor Hackman, recognized as a Hollywood icon, collected two Academy Awards throughout his distinguished film career that spanned from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Some of his notable roles include “The French Connection,” “Hoosiers,” and “Superman.”

In an illustrious film career, which lasted from the 1960s up until his retirement in the early 2000s, Hollywood icon Hackman secured two Oscars for his performances in films such as “The French Connection,” “Hoosiers,” and “Superman.
After settling down in Santa Fe years back, this duo opted for a secluded lifestyle. The representative from their estate has requested to keep the autopsy and investigation reports, including photos and videos, regarding their demise away from public scrutiny. The final decision on this matter lies with a state district judge.
