Gen Z left stunned by VERY un-PC unearthed footage of Australia's Next Top Model

I must say, watching this compilation of Australia’s Next Top Model has left me both astounded and saddened. As someone who grew up in that era, I remember the show fondly, but now, looking back, it’s clear that it was a product of its time, not always a positive one.

Young TikTok users from Generation Z were taken aback when they rediscovered old clips of Australia’s version of America’s Next Top Model, a show originally hosted by Tyra Banks that gained notoriety.

Last week, fashion designer Alex Perry was hardly recognizable during his visit to Coles in Sydney’s western district, casually going about his shopping errands.

The seldom-spotted 61-year-old displayed a well-toned body in a white T-shirt, matching it with some casual black cargo pants of a grunge style.

At the beginning of the popular video clip, you can hear Perry questioning: “What kind of feet are those? Could they be gorilla feet or transgender feet?

He appears throughout the two-minute montage of un-PC clangers, with a measuring tape in hand, and a hard word for the often teenage models about their weight.

In a more conversational manner, the sentence could be rephrased as: “Hey, let’s pause eating for a moment, it’s time to work out. How about hopping on that treadmill?” This maintains the original message while making it sound less direct and more casual.

Shortly afterward, he evaluated a particular model, commenting, “She’s incredibly attractive and elegant. Her skin is flawless,” then turned to the other judge and inquired, “Do you think she needs to lose a few kilograms?

One individual remarked, “Alex Perry seems to be experiencing the results of his past actions,” alluding to the well-known designer’s latest public display.

‘Can’t talk if you see him now,’ another user commented.

‘How is Alex Perry not cancelled?’ asked another.

With a fourth person chiming in: ‘Alex Perry they could never make me like you.’

One young TikToker from Generation Z was left utterly puzzled by what they’d just seen, and the most fitting comparison they could make was to a Chris Lilley comedy sketch.

The show saw young girls, most still teenagers, aspiring toward a high-fashion modelling career as they compete to avoid elimination each week by a panel of high-profile judges.

The fates on the program were decided by a trio of judges: model Myer face, Jennifer Hawkins who was once Miss Universe, Perry with his signature sunglasses, and a revolving group of prominent fashion figures such as Linda Evangelista, Jean Paul Gaultier, Kelly Osbourne, and Tyra herself.

‘She looks like a wild pig,’ Perry said while making snorting sounds at one model of colour.

The guest judges were brought in to step into the role previously held by the late Charlotte Dawson, a longstanding judge on the show who tragically passed away.

‘Oh my god she’s got a muffin top, it’s coming out over the jeans,’ judge Charlotte said in one clip.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’d rephrase that as follows: In the realm of reality television, I’ve seen a series that thrived on viewership with its stark portrayal of verbal and physical harassment, body shaming, emotional outbursts, and tantrums – all elements that should never be considered acceptable or entertaining.

In another part of the video, the show’s style director, Jonathan Pearce, became upset when models were seen sipping coffee during a swimwear photoshoot.

I can’t help but express my disappointment! It seems our swimwear photoshoot is underway, yet some are ordering iced chocolate drinks with milk – the very essence of summer is being diluted by this unexpected addition!

Pearce asked the model, ‘Do you reckon that’s a good decision? I’m confiscating this one.’

In another video, a displeased model, upset after losing a contest, exclaimed: “She’s an unattractive, oversized individual. Her size is 16.

The Australian judging panel inquired about the models’ opinions on who among their rivals appeared to be the most voluminous or full-figured.

Perry commented critically, “She appears disheveled.” He continued with a disparaging observation, suggesting that she looked as if she had spent the night at the club Arq, left in a state of exhaustion, and then carelessly ran a hand through her hair.

Many commenters said that particular comment, referencing Sydney’s gay nightclub, was ‘iconic.’

As Perry watched another runway, they commented that the model’s facial expression reminded them of American cold case suspect, JonBenét Ramsey.

‘She is JonBenét Ramsey, aged 18,’ he quipped. ‘Murderous beauty queen.’

On Friday, an anonymous former model told the Daily Mail that while it’s not a justification, the TV show was a reflection of its era.

That item can’t be returned, and it’s important to understand that this is typical of our industry during that time. The show you’re referring to was a product of the early 2000s.

One TikTok user remarked, ‘Given that I spent my childhood exposed to this, it’s no surprise that our perception of our bodies can be skewed.’

Alex Perry creates stunning clothing for women, yet it’s hard to comprehend how he does it so well, given his apparent disdain for us.

‘Watching this back is WILD,’ someone else commented.

Perry served as the lead judge throughout all ten seasons of Australia’s Next Top Model, and he is well-known for advocating rigorously for the implementation of the show’s 178cm minimum height requirement.

‘I like sleek, runway greyhounds. It’s my aesthetic,’ he explained in an old interview.

Daily Mail has reached out to Perry for comment.

In May 2020, Tyra responded on Twitter to criticism leveled against America’s Next Top Model when it became available on Netflix.

She expressed agreement with posts highlighting past America’s Next Top Model instances that seemed insensitive, and admitted they were questionable decisions in hindsight, as she shared on Twitter previously.

‘Appreciate your honest feedback and am sending so much love and virtual hugs.’
