At the highest levels of League of Legends esports, competition between teams from Korea and China is usually the focus. This is clearly visible even in the early stages of the 2025 World Championship, where Gen.G and Top Esports are continuing their strong rivalry in a crucial match to move forward.
These teams have a history of exciting matchups at major League of Legends tournaments. While this game isn’t as intense as their previous encounters at events like the EWC 2024 quarterfinals or MSI 2024 semifinals, both GEN and TES are eager to secure a spot in the final brackets of the 2025 LoL Worlds. The losing team will have another opportunity in Round 5, but facing strong contenders like T1 and BLG will make that a difficult task.
Both Gen.G and Top Esports suffered a single loss in the Swiss Stage of the tournament. Anyone’s Legend, a Chinese team, beat Gen.G, moving them into a tiebreaker group. Top Esports’ chances of advancing were eliminated after a loss to KT Rolster, a Korean team.
Before this match in the Round of 4, one team from China and two from Korea had already qualified for the League of Legends World Championship 2025 Playoffs. Korea currently has a lead in the number of teams advancing, and China is hoping to catch up. This rivalry makes the upcoming game between GEN and TES even more exciting.

The favorites and the upset potential
Gen.G has consistently been a top team in Korean League of Legends for the last two years, demonstrating their strength and skill. They’ve won two Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) championships during this time and recently finished in the top four at the 2024 World Championship.
Top Esports hasn’t been performing consistently well in regional competitions and hasn’t yet secured any victories in international tournaments. Despite this, they recently surprised everyone by defeating Gen.G in a significant game.
- TES defeated Gen.G in the quarterfinal of the LoL Esports World Cup 2024. Top Esports reached the grand final back then but were stopped by T1.

Even though that one match didn’t go their way, Gen.G has generally performed better in past encounters, solidifying their position as the team to beat.
- Gen.G defeated TES at Worlds 2024, in the Swiss stage, and at MSI 2024, in the semifinal.

The last day of the group stage at the League of Legends World Championship 2025 is October 25th. Teams from Korea and China are still expected to do well and make it to the playoffs, though anything could happen! G2 has qualified for the playoff bracket for the first time in five years.
