Gayle King stirs the pot between Audra McDonald and Patti LuPone after Broadway diva’s brutal ‘not a friend’ swipe

Earlier this week, the renowned actress Patti LuPone caused quite a stir when she candidly stated that she doesn’t view her fellow Broadway star, Audra McDonald, as a close friend.

However, Gayle King has become involved in the ongoing situation by directly questioning Audra about her controversial remark during a forthcoming interview on CBS Mornings.

Although she claimed not to have intended to create a commotion on Broadway by posing the question, it’s likely that her comment will only fuel the tension between the two parties involved.

Calmly, at age 54, Audra maintained she had no knowledge of any conflicts with her ex-colleague, who is now 76. She also shared that it has been more than ten years since they last saw each other.

Gayle, 70, inquired, “Audra was described as not being your friend by Patti Lapone… There seems to have been a lot of back and forth. Were you taken aback when you heard that from her?” Additionally, Gayle expressed curiosity, “I’m not aiming to cause a stir on Broadway, but I’d like to know how you’re handling this situation.

When Gayle posed the query, the theater icon maintained a taut smile yet kept her composure and poise.

She responded, “I’m not sure if there’s a disagreement between us, but it seems like something you might want to discuss with Patti.

It’s been around a decade since I last saw her, primarily due to our busy lives. Frankly, I’m unaware of any rift she might be referring to, so it would be best if you reached out to her to understand her perspective.

In a recent development, CBS Mornings shared a clip on their TikTok page, which they had scheduled prior to Patti’s remarks concerning Audra becoming popular. The full interview with Audra is set to be broadcasted next week.

This past week, The New Yorker ran an article featuring Patti Smith, during which she stated that her friendship with Audra has ended – a situation that had been ongoing for quite some time.

The sensitive subject emerged as Patti was questioned regarding Audra taking on the role in Gypsy, a musical that Patti has a strong connection to.

I inquired about her thoughts on McDonald’s rendition of Gypsy, and Michael Schulman noted that LuPone gazed at me wordlessly for a full fifteen seconds.

‘Then she turned to the window and sighed, “What a beautiful day.”‘

Additionally, Patti inquired about the Broadway involvement of Kecia Lewis, a Tony-award winning actress who previously claimed that LuPone had made offensive and racially insensitive remarks regarding Lewis’ show Hell’s Kitchen last year, labeling them as bullying and microaggressions.

Oh my goodness! It seems there’s an issue here. If Kecia Lewis claims to be a veteran in the world of Broadway, let’s verify her experience, as it appears she might not fully understand what she’s discussing.

She stated, “‘She’s completed seven, I’ve accomplished thirty-one. Don’t presume to be an expert, imposter.'” (With the clarification that Lewis has done 10 and LuPone 28 in this context.)
