Gawr Gura’s graduation sends internet into meltdown

worded differently: The news that Gawr Gura was retiring, often referred to as graduating within the VTubing community, created quite a buzz online.

There was a great deal of turmoil among internet users, especially fans of Virtual YouTubers, when it was announced that Gawr Gura would be graduating. Let’s take a look at how her fellow VTubers and their fanbase responded to this news.

Gawr Gura’s Graduation Announcement

The announcement was made through a short video posted on Gawr Gura’s YouTube channel.

Within a span of only two hours, the video managed to attract close to a million views. Given that she boasts an impressive 4.5 million subscribers, it’s no surprise that she ranks among the most popular VTubers globally.

Gawr Gura initially belonged to the pioneering English division of Hololive, known as Myth. Their entry into the scene is often recognized for sparking the global popularity of Virtual YouTubers beyond Japan’s borders in the Western world. Over time, she has risen to prominence as a renowned VTuber and content creator on an international scale.

On May 1, 2025, Gura’s performances as a hololive entertainer will come to an end. In the world of VTubing, this is known as “graduating.” She becomes the fourth holoEN member to graduate within a short span of less than a month. Her fellow talent, Amelia Watson, stopped streaming activities last September 2024, followed by Ceres Fauna and Nanashi Mumei in September and April of the previous year respectively.

Gawr Gura graduation reactions

Of course, the news sent waves through the internet.

Gura’s fellow generals, Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara, and Mori Calliope, have all responded to the update about X. Mori shared a brief note, while Ina’nis and Kiara asked for a moment to collect their thoughts.

Additionally, various divisions within Hololive expressed their reactions openly to the news, and even Motoaki Tanigo, the CEO of COVER Corporation – the company that owns Hololive – took the time to send a goodbye message directly to Gura.

Heya Gura-san, big shoutout to you for putting in all that grind on the Hololive English side! You and the rest of the Hololive English crew have truly made a massive impact, turning Hololive into an adored sensation across English-speaking lands. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve contributed. From the bottom of my gaming heart, thanks a million times over!

Motoaki “Yagoo” Tanigo

What tough news to start the day! Though our interactions were few, I treasure the little moments we shared. Let’s fill her with love every step of the way!” (This conveys the same sentiment as the original post but in a more natural and easy-to-read manner.)

Additionally, members from Japan’s branch, such as Takane Lui and Momosuzu Nene, also conveyed their sorrow regarding the same news.

I wish everyone could be content. Can’t we somehow remain with Hololive and still feel joyful? I’m seeking assistance from the company.

Naturally, the news also reached far beyond the VTubing space.

Fans of Gawr Gura, known as the Chumbuds, are understandably disheartened by the recent news, yet some have opted to cope with it using humor.

“For non [hololive] fans, this is like if Goku retired from fighting,” wrote X user @abichungus.
