Gavin & Stacey star explains surprise Christmas romance

As a longtime Gavin & Stacey fan with over two decades of watching sitcoms under my belt, I must say that the 2024 Christmas special took me by surprise, much like when I realized I’d been watching reruns instead of new episodes! Melanie Walters’ character, Gwen, finding love in the arms of Dave Coaches was certainly an unexpected twist.

Gavin & Stacey star Melanie Walters has responded to the 2024 Christmas special’s biggest reveal.

At the end of the cherished BBC comedy series, it was disclosed that Smithy remained with Sonia following the 2019 episode. However, what left both the audience and the characters stunned was discovering that Gwen had a new partner: Dave the Coach!

When I received the final script, Director Christine Gernon playfully hinted that my character’s plotline might cause me to let out a small shriek upon reading it.

In the original, the sentence is: “The actor said at a press screening (via Radio Times), ‘Indeed, when I turned the page, and there it was. It was Dave Coaches. I did [shriek]!’

She expressed her joy over Gwen finding love, yet admitted that she had anticipated the unknown suitor to be someone different.

She admitted, as she pondered the upcoming narrative, that a small part of her secretly wished, “Perhaps there might be some romance for Gwen,” she thought.

Later on, upon seeing it, I never would have guessed it was Dave Coaching. Instead, I assumed it might have been something Doris had discarded.

In the end, Walters expressed her deep gratitude, stating that she was incredibly grateful to be part of such a significant moment for her character in the finale. She extended her heartfelt appreciation to writers Ruth Jones and James Corden for crafting an extraordinary, wondrous, and beautiful storyline for Gwen.

In the episode, it’s possible that Stacey and Jason didn’t respond favorably to the surprise development, but according to Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason, he believes Gwen and Dave make an excellent pairing as a couple.
