Gavin & Stacey character is left out of Christmas Day finale because there was 'no room' in the script - but viewers still thought he was Gwen's secret lover!

As a die-hard Gavin & Stacey fan from the heart of Wales, I must say, I was left feeling as empty as a coal mine after the Christmas Day finale. The absence of our beloved Dick Powell, the only native Welsh speaker and the lifeblood of Barry Island’s black market scene, was as noticeable as a lamb at a vegetarian buffet.

Fans of the beloved series, Gavin & Stacey, enjoyed seeing familiar faces again as several recurring characters made their return during the show’s heartwarming finale on Wednesday night.

However, some found themselves pondering over the reason behind the exclusion of Dick Powell, the charlatan from Barry Island, in the Christmas Day finale, given the misconception that he was secretly romantically involved with the mysterious love interest of Gwynn.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my heartfelt appreciation for the captivating performance by Gwynfor Roberts in that beloved series. His portrayal of the intriguing black market trader, who happened to be the sole native Welsh speaker, left an indelible mark on me and fellow fans for multiple episodes.

Nevertheless, it was noticeable that he didn’t show up for the highly-anticipated ending, even though all other characters returned.

In my role as a lifestyle expert, I recently learned that when 12.5 million individuals tuned into X on Christmas Day, quite a few confessed their disappointment upon not seeing Powell. Initially, it seemed plausible that he could be Gwen’s new partner, but later discoveries revealed him to be none other than Dave Coaches.

One person wrote: ‘Gwen and Dave are coaches! That was such a surprising revelation! I thought it could have been the enigmatic figure, Dick Powell, but boy, was I mistaken!’

Another person commented: ‘For some reason, Dave Coaches didn’t cross my mind initially; instead, I thought of Pete, Dick Powell, and Owain Hughes first.’

While a third commented: ‘I thought it was gonna be Dick Powell, the only welsh speaking guy.’

Previously, it was confirmed by co-creator and actress Ruth Jones during a press conference with her fellow cast members in December that Roberts would not appear.

She clarified that originally they had planned for Dick Powell, but unfortunately there simply wasn’t enough space for him. She wished him well.

In the last installment of Gavin & Stacey, fans were left satisfied as characters Smithy and Nessa found their blissful conclusion, half a decade after the suspenseful Christmas proposition cliffhanger.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that the holiday season ignited with excitement in both Billericay and Barry. Preparations were underway for what seemed to be a wedding, possibly between Neil “Smithy” Smith and Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins, at the home of Stacey Shipman and her husband Gavin. The anticipation is palpable!

As it turned out, the wedding was actually between Smithy and Sonia, who appeared as his girlfriend in the 2019 Christmas Day episode, portrayed by Laura Aikman.

On Christmas Day, an impressive 12.5 million people tuned in to watch Gavin and Stacey’s final episode, making it the highest-rated program of the day.

For over five years, viewers eagerly anticipated the outcome regarding the cherished characters from the BBC sitcom, wondering whether Smithy would finally accept Nessa’s marriage proposal.

Viewers widely praised the last episode as ‘flawless’, finding themselves moved to tears when the much-loved series concluded after 17 years on air.

In a ratings competition among TV channels, the BBC emerged victorious with an audience of 10 million people tuning in for the revival of Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

8.7 million viewers tuned in to EastEnders as Cindy Beale was left for dead after being struck with a shovel in a two-part episode, whereas only 2.8 million watched Gail Platt’s farewell on ITV’s Coronation Street.
