Gavin Creel, Tony Winner and Broadway Veteran, Dies at 48
As a movie reviewer with a heart for Broadway and a deep appreciation for the talent it nurtures, I must say that Gavin Creel‘s passing leaves me profoundly saddened. His life was a vibrant tapestry of artistry, grace, and resilience, woven intricately through the world of theater.
The Associated Press reports that Gavin Creel, a long-time Broadway actor who received a Tony Award for his role in ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and was nominated for ‘Hair’ and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, passed away on Monday due to a rare and aggressive type of cancer. He was 48 years old.
Matt Polk, a publicist, announced that Creel passed away at his Manhattan residence due to advanced skin cancer affecting the nerves (metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma).
In my humble opinion, I had the privilege of embodying Dr. Pomatter in Sara Bareilles’ musical masterpiece, “Waitress,” on Broadway in 2019, and later on the West End in 2020. Notably, I was honored with an Olivier Award for my performance in “The Book of Mormon.
In the 2016 production at Studio 54, he portrayed the character Steven Kodaly in the play “She Loves Me“. The following theatre season saw him cast as Cornelius Hackl, sharing the stage with legends Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce, in the highly successful 2017 revival of “Hello, Dolly!” directed by Jerry Zaks.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of portraying Bill, the singing waiter, in both “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Eloise at Christmastime,” sharing the screen with none other than Julie Andrews. Fast forward to 2021, I found myself joining forces with Matt Bomer in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries, “American Horror Stories.” This year, my solo concert was captured for the grand premiere of PBS’s “Stars Onstage at Westport Country Playhouse.
He leaves behind his mother Nancy Clemens Creel, his father James William Creel, his siblings Heather Elise Creel and Allyson Jo Creel, as well as his partner Alex Temple Ward.
