As a devoted fan who has eagerly awaited each Gavin and Stacey episode for the past 17 years, I can honestly say that this final installment feels like the end of an era. Before it aired on Christmas Day, creators James Corden and Ruth Jones emotionally said goodbye to the show they conceived 20 years ago, during the premiere of its final episode on Wednesday, where they both shed tears.

The duo, known for portraying Smithy and Nessa in the renowned series, eventually disclosed that ever since the show’s 2019 proposal cliffhanger was first aired, viewers have been eagerly waiting for an answer. However, it wasn’t until last year that they agreed to collaborate once more to write a final episode.

Spectators were taken aback as the seasonal finale of the show ended without revealing Smithy’s response after Nessa declared her love and proposed to him.

Currently, enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating that this forthcoming hour-and-a-half long episode might at last provide the solution to the critical question, offering insight into the events surrounding the well-known fishing excursion.

At a Q&A following the airing of the last episode a few days ago, emotional Ruth expressed her apologies, saying, “I feel truly sorry. I’m just not up to par” while crying and acknowledging James, whom she referred to as “my fellow journeyer.

In August 2023, they initially talked about creating a new episode, but they didn’t announce it to the public until May of this current year.

Regarding Nessa’s suggestion, she expressed that it took her some time to rise from a kneeling position, and frankly, she doubts she could do the same now.

Last summer, we opted to schedule a conversation due to the fact that, as close friends, we often chat extensively. However, when we both work together constantly, finding time for casual conversations about everyday life becomes challenging. So, I suggested setting aside specific times. If I’m not mistaken, it was August. I proposed 4pm on Tuesday, and we decided to connect via FaceTime.

James and Ruth confided that they chose to conceal their intentions of penning another installment from the show’s cast and higher-ups at the BBC, only revealing their clandestine meetings with BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore once they had progressed deeply into the writing phase.

In September, we found ourselves at the same location. Since we both had a week off then, we decided to meet up, saying, “If the events don’t reveal the story for us, if the characters fail to show us what’s going on, it doesn’t matter. We haven’t shared this plan with anyone – not the actors, not the BBC, and we didn’t.” James stated this.

We didn’t get in touch with Charlotte until after writing approximately 70 pages of this unique work. By that point, we felt as if we had something significant that we were eager to reveal, since it might seem like absolute nonsense.

It seems more like an external force is guiding our writing process rather than us having full control over it. We seem to simply gather together, almost as if opening a gateway, and then the characters themselves appear, sharing their stories and messages that they wish to communicate.

In the episode, Bryn is observed preparing to transport his Picasso on another journey to Essex, meanwhile Stacey and Gavin are seeking fresh ideas to invigorate their longstanding seventeen-year relationship.

Meanwhile, it’s noticed by Gwen’s daughter that she exhibits peculiar behavior, as Neil The Baby prepares to start an apprenticeship with his father elsewhere.

In Billericay, Pam’s feeling quite anxious about being a hostess, made worse by Mick, who just retired, frequently practicing golf strokes inside their living room. Additionally, Pete and Dawn’s relationship has seen its fair share of highs and lows.

2019’s Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special garnered impressive viewership of more than 12 million on its initial broadcast, suggesting that the final numbers could potentially be even larger.
