Gavin And Stacey fans are left in tears by ‘perfect’ finale as beloved comedy comes to an end with an answer to THAT festive proposal and the truth about the fishing trip
As a long-time fan of the delightful and relatable characters from Gavin & Stacey, I must say that watching the much-anticipated Christmas special was a heartwarming experience for me. Having grown up with this show as part of my weekly TV schedule, it felt like reuniting with old friends after many years apart.
After seventeen years since its debut on BBC, the beloved comedy series Gavin and Stacey concluded with a special holiday episode on Wednesday. Fans were swift in praising the “flawless” ending to the show.
The show that initially aired in 2007, co-created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, ended with the on-again, off-again couple Smithy and Nessa publicly confessing their love for each other and getting married, albeit after experiencing some bumps in the road.
As viewers eagerly awaited the Christmas Special in 2019 to find out if Smithy would agree to Nessa’s proposal, a leap of five years showed that they were, in fact, planning a wedding. However, things weren’t as straightforward as they appeared.
In the previous holiday special, Sonia, Smithy’s girlfriend, didn’t make a favorable impression on the Shipman or West family. It was unexpectedly disclosed that Smithy had actually proposed to her, and the news of Laura Aikman’s comeback to the series was kept under wraps.
In this episode, Smithy’s special day dominated the proceedings. So, Gavin and Stacey journeyed back to Essex accompanied by her Welsh relatives, joining Pam and Mick for a stag party celebration before the big event.
In the time leading up to the wedding, the family’s worries about Sonia persisted because she pretended to be ill to skip pre-wedding events and expressed eagerness to marry, hoping it would allow her to cut ties with Gavin’s relatives.
Nessa appeared hesitant about venturing to Billericay for Smithy’s major event, given that significant transformations were on the horizon since their son, Neil, was preparing to move to Essex with his father, to undertake an apprenticeship.
Later on, I found out that Smithy hadn’t responded to my proposition, as our conversation was disrupted by Gavin, and we haven’t discussed it since then.
In another setting, Gavin and Stacey tried to inject excitement into their marriage by experimenting with role-playing. Although she had worries that their bond might be growing weak, a heated night at Pam and Mick’s put an end to such apprehensions.
In a scene reminiscent of the drunken night from the third season, Smithy spent the evening before the stag do enjoying himself with the Shipman/West family. This fun-filled evening ended up with Smithy missing his suit fitting appointment the following day, causing Sonia to become extremely angry.
Without fail, an episode of Gavin and Stacey seems incomplete without more relationship turmoil for Pete and Dawn. Despite their divorce during the show’s five-year time jump, they can’t seem to stay apart. One particularly heated scene unfolds as a result.
In a tribute-filled gathering filled with references to the earlier series, Smithy ventured out on his bachelor party with Gavin, accompanied by their whole group of friends that included Deano, Chinese Alan, and Fingers. They aimed to rekindle the past glories, but the outcome was somewhat varied.
In a touching moment, it seemed like Smithy hinted at his feelings for Nessa when they shared corn on the cob together, symbolizing one of the steamiest scenes from the second season of the show.
It became increasingly apparent that Sonia was more focused on the aesthetic aspects of her upcoming wedding rather than transitioning into being Mrs. Smith. As a result, Smithy’s relatives started voicing their worries that he might be making a serious error in proceeding with the nuptials.
Amidst the whirlwind of wedding preparations, I found myself growing increasingly curious about my mom, Gwen. It turned out she had been harboring a secret from me – a romantic partner! Quite a twist in our family tale, wouldn’t you agree?
In an unexpected turn of events, my followers were taken aback when they found out that the enigmatic gentleman I’ve been associating with is none other than my ex-partner, Dave – yes, the very same one who used to coach me!
As Uncle Bryn clearly showed his anger, Gwen countered by bringing up the well-known fishing trip, which may have sparked anticipation in some viewers that they would finally uncover the truth surrounding the notable excursion.
However, it appears that the full truth may remain undisclosed, since the family was stopped just as Dave was about to reveal it, leaving the matter potentially unresolved for television records.
Looking forward to Smithy’s wedding, I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of anxiety as the date approached. Sharing my concerns with Gavin, he gently cautioned me about disrupting or tarnishing our friend’s special moment. After all, it was their day to shine.
Fans were also treated to the surprise return of Sheridan Smith as Smithy’s sister Rudi, and Pam Ferris as his mum Cath.
As I took my leave from Barry, where I had parted ways with my son Neil and Smithy, I confided to all that it was time for me to resume my duties at sea. In a poignant moment, the show depicted me setting sail from the island, while Neil ‘The Baby’ offered a heart-tugging performance during his father’s wedding ceremony.
While Smithy and Sonia were about to declare their marriage vows, with Anna Maxwell Martin serving as the registrar, an unexpected turn of events had Gavin interrupt the ceremony, advising his close friend to take a moment and consider his choice once more.
As the registrar requested those who agreed with Gavin to rise, the entire Shipman-West family stood up, prompting Smithy to acknowledge his feelings for Nessa at last, and swearing to pursue her.
Everyone piled into Dave’s RV and sped off towards Southampton, as Nessa was about to embark on her voyage. After seventeen years of anticipation, he expressed his affection for her and urged her to rethink her departure, unfolding a heartfelt scene.
As a steadfast admirer of mine, I found myself echoing the sentiments of Nessa, who had long maintained that she wouldn’t revisit the idea of proposing to Smithy once more. However, in an unexpected turn of events, I chose to honor an offer made five years ago, one that I carried with me all this while. With a sense of resolve and anticipation, I knelt before her and humbly asked for her hand in marriage.
In the next scene, we find Smithy and Nessa finally tying the knot during a heartfelt ceremony in Barry. The show concluded with a moving montage where the entire family celebrated their joyous union at The Dolphin pub, culminating in a cherished group photo.
It was a finale that brought a long-awaited end to the story that began back in 2007, and fans rushed to social media to praise the ‘perfect’ ending.
Taking to Twitter they wrote: ‘What an ending, my heart feels full’;
‘NESSA AND SMITHY FINALLY!!!! The nation rejoices’; ‘last 15 mins were pure CINEMA. perfect end’;
Among the greatest TV finale endings ever, undeniably. Kudos to James and Ruth, who managed to make us deeply invested in these characters over an impressive 17-year journey. A well-deserved round of applause.
In my opinion, I may have just witnessed the most flawless ending to any comedy series. It was a heartfelt farewell for every character, skillfully crafted by Ruth and James. The humor, emotions, and wit were all perfectly balanced, making it an exceptional experience. Simply amazing!
‘Gavin and Stacey finale was what I’ve needed, the closure I feel is IMENSE’;
@JKCorden, it was flawless! You and Ruth have crafted a tale I’ve grown up cherishing. A truly satisfying conclusion. Thank you for this delightful Christmas gift.
‘It was truly remarkable – flawless from every angle, impeccably well-organized.’
Another joked: ‘This is making me wanna text my ex and tell them I still love them’.
Before airing the episode, creators Ruth and James disclosed that the final day of shooting was actually the closing scene viewers saw, leading to a very emotional day on set for everyone involved.
At a Q&A session after the premiere last week, James commented: “The initial plan for the show had us wrapping up, and it seemed like I would be alone in a car on a trailer. However, Ruth and I couldn’t believe that could be our final day!
…and I believe it was on that occasion when we expressed our desire to contribute to the scheduling, primarily due to conflicts with people’s schedules.
We’ve got a large ensemble who are each quite occupied with various commitments, yet they’ve managed to coordinate their schedules remarkably well in order to pull this off. However, there was a strong consensus among us that the final day of filming should serve as the climax and that the last line we capture should be the very last thing we record for good.
Ruth commented: ‘Isn’t it just the montage in the script? That meant we had an entire day, which was quite a treat since usually time is tight and you’re rushing to finish. But, fortunately, everyone involved in production made sure this could happen so that we had the privilege of having a final day where everyone was present and our main task was basically just being there without much dialogue!’
It was delightful, as it truly resembled a genuine wedding ceremony, didn’t it? From the atmosphere of a real wedding transitioning into a pub reception, we felt incredibly thankful for the opportunity to make the experience authentic. This small change had a significant impact and made all the difference in our special moment.
After Chris called “cut” on our final take, I made sure the sound team played “[Run] by Stephen Fretwell, our theme song. That really fired us up!
James mentioned: “I believe that set was the most emotionally charged one I’ve ever worked on, and it was truly special because many of our team members have been with us since day one. It feels fitting that we could wrap things up on such a poignant note, especially on a Monday in Barry.
Talking about the surprising dockside proposal in the show, James and Ruth mentioned that it was quite a challenge to keep the scene hidden from everyone, as the original plan was to have it at Cardiff Airport. However, a team member suggested an alternate location when they couldn’t secure permission for the airport.
During the taping of the final episode, the entire cast found it an emotional experience, even causing James to shed tears while reminiscing about their shared journey on the series.
As a devoted follower, let me be honest – I’m running low on energy. Witnessing it with an audience, primarily composed of my fellow team members, was truly delightful, though.
I’m delighted that our efforts met your expectations, and it’s truly heartwarming to listen to everyone’s reactions. After all, when we were creating it, we knew you would be watching, and having seen it multiple times ourselves, hearing the first-time responses from others was simply delightful.
