As a dedicated follower of Gavin and Stacey since its inception, I must say that this latest update has sent me into a state of pure elation. Having grown up with these characters, they have become an integral part of my life, just like family. The thought of their final episode airing on Christmas Day is bittersweet; it’s the end of an era but also a beautiful way to celebrate the festive season with a beloved sitcom.

On Tuesday, the creators of Gavin and Stacey, James Corden and Ruth Jones, along with their fellow cast members, shared a significant update about the show.

The pair appeared on BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast with Zoe Ball, as part of a special “Gavin & Stacey Takeover,” prior to the last-ever episode of their popular sitcom.

James and Ruth welcomed Joanna Page, Matt Horne, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Rob Wilfort to the extended episode that lasted for three hours.

During the performance, they unveiled mysteries concerning the forthcoming finale, reminisced about cherished moments from the series, and delved into everything festive.

Helen Thomas, the Head of Radio 2, shared: “The unique Gavin and Stacey control over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show on this occasion is going to be a delightful holiday surprise for us all, preceding the highly-anticipated airing of the last episode ever on Christmas Day.

I’m eagerly looking forward to greeting Ruth, James, and their exceptional fellow actors at the station, so we can sprinkle a bit of Christmas enchantment for Radio 2 audience members!

Ruth has acknowledged that fans of Gavin and Stacey could find the Christmas special unexpected, given her and James Corden’s conversation about the last-ever episode.

Fervent followers are eagerly guessing how the creators might conclude the series, as they provided a sneak peek into their plans on Monday.

After the recent episode, several queries are still left hanging, such as the events that unfolded following Nessa’s surprising proposal to Smithy.

Although the storyline for this year’s Christmas episode remains a closely guarded secret, Ruth has confirmed that they will indeed be wrapping up the sitcom.

Speaking in an interview with The Big Issue she said: ‘I keep telling people this finale might not be what you are expecting. And I guarantee we will definitely not be coming back.’

James commented: ‘On Christmas Day, you’ll witness the climax of a 20-year romantic tale, one that I hope demonstrates, above all, that love can be intricate, chaotic, and universal.’

Elsewhere, one Gavin and Stacey star has confirmed that they will be appearing in the highly-anticipated Christmas special and dropped a major hint about the final scene.

Steffan Rhodri, recognized as Dave ‘Coaches’ Gooch in the series, has shared a tiny teaser regarding the last episode.

In conversation with Metro, he remarked: “Dave, my character, is somewhat of an outcast. However, in our final scene, which serves as the conclusion, everyone came together, making for a very moving moment.

He mentioned that he can’t disclose any more details regarding the Christmas special, however, he is able to verify his participation in it.

Steffan missed the 2019 Christmas special, meaning he hasn’t filmed for the show in 17 years.

He said: ‘I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was like putting on a pair of old trousers. It was really lovely to hang out with them again.’

Supporters are well aware that Coach Driver Dave is renowned for his distinctive statement regarding behavior on his bus: “I allow cigarettes and marijuana, as well as solvents and amphetamines; however, I draw the line at crack.

However, what might be less known is that Steffan modeled the character after his uncle, who happens to be a bus driver with a similar demeanor.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special airs at Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
