Gavin and Stacey actress Ruth Jones set to reprise role as Nessa just days after final episode aired
As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for British pop culture and a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say that the return of Ruth Jones as Nessa Jenkins in the Shipping Forecast is an absolute delight! It’s like welcoming an old friend back into our living rooms.
Just a few short days have passed since 12 million viewers tuned in to watch the last-ever episode of Gavin and Stacey, yet it appears that Ruth Jones will once again be donning the character of Nessa Jenkins.
On New Year’s Day, the actress plans to don Nessa’s signature black bob wig and leather skirt once more to deliver the Shipping Forecast on Radio 4 as part of the program’s hundredth anniversary celebration on the BBC.
Ms. Jones, aged 58, stated, ‘Nessa boasts an intriguing past, with one of her roles being out at sea. The Shipping Forecast held significant importance and utility for her.’
In the last episode of Gavin and Stacey this year, James Corden’s character, Smithy (aged 46), prevented Nessa from returning to her job on the ships by hastily rushing to Southampton Dock.
He proposed to Welsh Nessa and the final scene featured a heartwarming montage of their wedding and the couple finally getting their happily ever after.
The show garnered its highest Christmas viewership since 2008, averaging approximately 12.3 million viewers.
For the very first time, a character from Gavin and Stacey will make an appearance, even though creators Mr. Corden and Ms. Jones have promised not to produce any more episodes of this popular sitcom.
On New Year’s Day, at 7pm, there’s going to be a fresh documentary about the show called “Gavin and Stacey: A Heartfelt Goodbye,” airing instead.
The creative pair will release a new book, titled “When Gavin Met Stacey and All That Came After: A Tale of Love and Friendship,” scheduled for fall publication.
Despite ruling out a return to the series, Corden has said he wants to work with Jones again.
He expressed: ‘I’m unsure if we might come up with another concept, but I can truly assert that if we don’t make an effort to consider the possibility of collaborating on a project, I would feel quite disheartened.’
In October 1925, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Stephen Fry, Adrian Dunbar (from Line Of Duty), and sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur were some of the notable figures who participated in the initial airing of the Met Office’s weather forecast on the BBC.
Notable individuals will make appearances during the day, providing insightful historical maritime forecasts while also reminiscing about their personal experiences.
Mohit Bakaya, controller of Radio 4, expressed: “The Shipping Forecast is an invaluable national asset. I’m thrilled that we are commemorating its centennial on the BBC by offering a unique lineup of programs to celebrate its 100 years, starting with New Year’s Day.
The Shipping Forecast is created by the Met Office, acting as an agent for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
2024 saw the celebration of its 100th anniversary, as it was initially broadcast on January 1st, 1924, under the name “Weather Shipping” as a weather report.
It moved a year later to the BBC.
