Gaten Matarazzo on Mark Hamill in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: "He elevates the show so much"

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has grown up with the saga and its characters, experiencing LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy feels like stepping into a dream come true. Gaten Matarazzo’s portrayal of Sig Greebling brings an infectious energy to this delightful miniseries, and his enthusiasm for the project is palpable in every scene.

The latest miniseries, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, is set in a distant galaxy. This entertaining series features Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things as Sig Greebling, a character who unintentionally alters all of time and space by his nerf herding activities. Alongside Jedi Bob, portrayed by Bobby Moynihan, they embark on a journey to set things straight.

Matarazzo had a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, expressing his enthusiasm for the project, particularly sharing the screen with the legendary Star Wars actor, Mark Hamill.

Matarazzo admitted that he hadn’t realized Mark would be part of the project when it was sent to him. However, he added that it was an obvious choice for him from the start. “Being a huge Star Wars fan, I jumped at the opportunity when it came along,” he said, explaining that even if the script wasn’t perfect, he wouldn’t hesitate to join the cast.

In the eyes of many who’ve watched “Rebuild the Galaxy”, the script has received universal acclaim. Matarazzo concurred, stating, “Indeed, the script wasn’t what one might expect. I was captivated by the brilliance, imagination, and originality displayed by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, our two writers whom I’ve long admired. Thus, all the pieces came together to create a dream project that felt like a passionate fan creation. I thought, ‘This is going to be extraordinary,’ and Lucasfilm gave Dan and Benji the freedom to explore their ideas almost without limit, an unusual privilege in itself.

There was a little part in the back of Matarazzo’s mind wondering if he would be in the same show as Hamill, “I remember reading scenes with Luke in the booth, and I was like, ‘Is there a world where we get Mark for this?’ I meant it more as a bit, but they were like, ‘We’re talking with him now.’ And I was like, ‘No way. You’re [explitive] me.’ And then, two days later, they were like, ‘Dude, we got him.’ So they were as shocked as I was, but I think Mark liked the new fun spin that Luke took.”

In the miniseries, Matarazzo expressed admiration for Hamill, not only for his performance in Star Wars but also for his enduring legacy as Luke Skywalker. He stated, “Acting as Luke since 1977 must be incredibly rewarding yet incredibly draining. It’s a privilege to see him return, and he truly enriches the show. His presence significantly boosts the quality of the series, and it speaks volumes that actors from the original trilogy are eager to join us. We are deeply appreciative.
