Gary Oldman’s Oscar-winning British biopic is on TV tonight

This weekend is all about the Oscars, and luckily for you, the BBC offers a past Oscar-winning movie for your viewing pleasure tonight on television.

The biographical film “Darkest Hour,” set in Britain, earned Gary Oldman some of the finest accolades in his acting career for his representation of Winston Churchill. He clinched the Best Actor award at the Oscars, adding to his victories at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards.

The film takes place in the initial stages of World War II, specifically amidst the May 1940 war cabinet crisis when Churchill struggled to convince his cabinet to keep fighting instead of negotiating a truce with Germany.

If you haven’t seen the movie or fancy a rewatch, Darkest Hour airs tonight at 6.30pm on BBC Two.

No need to fret if you have other commitments on a Saturday night, because you can catch up with Darkest Hour on BBC iPlayer not long after it’s been aired.

It’s also available to watch right now on Netflix for all subscribers.

Back in 2018, Oldman revealed that he used a “Churchill app” to get into character.

He stated that you can save Churchill’s speeches onto your mobile device, allowing you to carry them with you at all times. He admitted to often playing these speeches repeatedly.

Additionally, he hinted at the potential for reprising the role of Churchill once more, possibly in a film based on events during the latter stages of World War II, or in a production adapting one of Churchill’s own short stories titled “The Dream“.

There might be a follow-up story since at the conclusion of the war, there was a meeting with Stalin and Roosevelt. Roosevelt is an intriguing figure, but he’s nearing the end of his term, so it’s possible that, as Oldman suggested.

[In] The Dream, his father’s spirit, Randolph, appears in his workspace at Chartwell. This isn’t a costly affair, it’s more about two individuals interacting, not material possessions. Perhaps I’ll attempt to make this concept a reality.

Nothing from what we discussed has happened as of now, but for the time being, you can enjoy his acclaimed portrayal in the movie “Darkest Hour”.

Tonight at 6:30 PM, you can catch “Darkest Hour” on BBC Two. It won’t be long before it’s also accessible on BBC iPlayer following the live broadcast.
