Looking for a break from holiday cheer? Film4 is showing the action thriller Hunter Killer, starring Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler, tonight at 6:40pm. It’s a 2018 film if you’re unfamiliar with it.
The movie is based on the 2012 novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace. It tells the story of a team of Navy SEALS sent on a dangerous mission: to secretly enter enemy territory, rescue the kidnapped Russian President, and prevent a worldwide crisis.
Besides the two main stars, I was really excited to see Common in the movie – he’s a great actor as well as a rapper! And the supporting cast is fantastic too, with Michael Nyqvist, Linda Cardellini, Michael Trucco, and Toby Stephens all bringing their talents to the screen.

Tonight, Film4 is showing the movie, and it will then be available to stream on Channel 4 for around a month.

The movie Hunter Killer didn’t perform well in theaters, earning just $31.7 million despite costing around $40 million to make.
This movie was more popular with audiences than with professional critics. It received a 32% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but 67% of general viewers enjoyed it. Its user score on IMDb is 6.7 out of 10.
Most professional critics agree that Hunter Killer is predictable and relies on tired tropes. However, the Associated Press pointed out that it’s often so unintentionally funny that it ends up being enjoyable.
On IMDb, viewers praised the film as a fun return to the classic action movies of the 1980s that many enjoyed as children. They especially highlighted the stunning visual effects, particularly in the underwater sequences.
“Full of action, excitement, plot twists and yes a bit gung ho, but so what,” wrote another fan.
