Oldman explained that Jim Gordon in “Batman Begins” seemed weary due to the corruption among cops, and he often traveled between LA and London so as not to leave his kids alone for too long.

It seems like you made approximately 27 round-trips during your first stint with Batman, my friend. This meant that I’d return home for two days, spend time with the kids, head back to work for three days, take another three days off at home, then fly to London and complete one mission. The following morning, I’d board the plane again and make my way back.

Indeed, I find myself anxious even at the thought of such extensive air travel. In contrast, for Gary Oldman, it was a crucial requirement to avoid prolonged absences from his children’s lives. He also communicated to director Christopher Nolan that he would reverse course en route to the airport if there were any issues with the daily footage necessitating reshoots of his scenes.

Spending so much time traveling between continents might negatively affect an actor portraying a cheerful character. But for Gary Oldman, this constant travel seemed to be advantageous when he was embodying Jim Gordon in “Batman Begins.” In his own words:

In the movie “Batman Begins”, we first encounter Lieutenant Gordon who appears content being one of the few honest policemen in the GCPD and hardly gets along with his corrupt partner Arnold Flass. However, when Bruce Wayne, who recalled Gordon’s kindness from his childhood, confronted him as his vigilante alter-ego, a glimmer of hope emerged. By the end of “Batman Begins”, Scarecrow and Ra’s al Ghul were defeated, causing all the corrupt cops to flee in fear. This left Sergeant Gordon to forge a new alliance with Gotham City’s masked guardian, Batman.

Just like Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman was a constant presence throughout the Dark Knight trilogy, and he remains my preferred portrayal of James Gordon.
