Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) contemplates playing Dumbledore in new Harry Potter show
As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of Harry Potter, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation with the news that HBO is working on a TV adaptation of the series. While eight fantastic movies have already graced our screens, there’s no denying that a TV show allows for a more thorough exploration of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books.
In the Harry Potter films, Gary Oldman portrayed Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather. It appears that he hasn’t finished exploring the magical universe just yet. With HBO planning a multi-season TV adaptation of the Harry Potter series spanning over 10 years, Oldman has hinted at his desire to participate in this new venture.
Earlier this year, news about a new Harry Potter TV series sparked diverse responses. With eight brilliant films already out there, one might wonder why another adaptation is needed. However, the flexibility of a TV show enables a more comprehensive interpretation of the books. Unlike movies with their time constraints, a TV show offers writers more freedom to delve deeper into the stories. Notably, several original cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe (as Harry) and Bonnie Wright (as Ginny Weasley), have expressed their backing for this upcoming series.
Currently, Gary Oldman has expressed his readiness to return to the magical realm. Although it’s tough to envision anyone else playing Sirius Black, Oldman doesn’t anticipate being asked to reprise his previous role. Instead, he’s aiming for none other than the position of Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. During an interview with IndieWire, he stated, “I believe they will bring in a new group of actors. Perhaps in a few years, I could take on the role of Dumbledore.
Oldman went on to mention that “no one’s approached me” about the role, but admits he thinks there’s still plenty of room to explore the character. “I love Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.”
It’s possible I envision Gary Oldman for the role of Dumbledore. I hope the casting crew shares my sentiment. At the moment, HBO is grappling with the challenging task of selecting the main characters Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
James McAvoy “nearly” played Tom Riddle in the Harry Potter movies
Regarding Harry Potter, it was disclosed by James McAvoy that years ago he was presented with a substantial amount of money for the opportunity to play the series’ infamous antagonist, Tom Riddle, who eventually transforms into Lord Voldemort.
In an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, McAvoy shared his reasons for rejecting the offer. He stated, “I recall it was early in my career when I auditioned for the role. It seemed they wanted to secure me and possibly ten other actors with a contract, so that we could be held for future selection. However, at the time, I had barely begun working.
They offered quite a lot of money. For me at that time, it was a ton of money. It was like £40,000 or something like that. I’d done very little work and I wouldn’t be able to do any work for about seven months, I think.
Despite turning down an opportunity early in his career that seemed daring due to potential risks, McAvoy eventually became a highly successful actor, taking on roles in blockbusters like the Chronicles of Narnia and X-Men.
HBO CEO expects the Harry Potter show to air in “late ’26-’27”
Additionally, Casey Bloys, HBO’s CEO, discussed a possible release date for the series with Deadline. Although the writers are just beginning their work, making it premature to discuss an airdate, he anticipates that the series will premiere sometime between late 2026 and early 2027.
It seems that the Harry Potter series on television is yet a few years away, given the substantial work that lies ahead. However, with Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod at the helm, I’m incredibly optimistic and enthusiastic about what they are planning.
