Gary Numan’s wife Gemma, 57, is hospitalised as she faces major spinal and kidney surgeries after years of agony

Gary Numan’s spouse, Gemma, is currently admitted in the hospital, preparing to undergo significant spinal and kidney operations due to years of unbearable pain, headaches, and a minor stroke.

A woman, aged 57 with three children, posted an update following a spinal operation in London aimed at alleviating the debilitating neck discomfort and migraines she’s experienced over the last two years.

On Monday, Gemma, who tied the knot with synthpop legend Gary in 1997, shared a sequence of hospital bed photos on Instagram. She expressed that the ongoing treatment was her means of managing the upcoming months until she could undergo spinal surgery.

She recently underwent another spinal treatment in London, similar to the one from last year – it provided her with approximately 8 months of pain relief.

After experiencing a return of my neck pain and migraines, I’m here once more, hoping for relief that can carry me through the upcoming months. It’s only after the Gary Numan tour that I must undergo surgery to remove and replace five cervical discs as soon as possible.

The process performed on her aims at particular regions of the backbone to alleviate pressure on nerves and reduce inflammation, providing short-term pain relief while allowing for a more complex procedure to be scheduled later.

Gemma explains that the challenging journey she mentioned earlier is far from over. After his worldwide tour concludes by year’s end, they plan to go back to their home in Los Angeles with their three daughters Raven, Persia, and Echo. Once there, she will undergo a kidney autotransplantation – a complicated surgery involving the relocation of her own kidney within her body. This procedure is relatively uncommon.

She mentions that a suggested procedure is being discussed to manage her Nutcracker Syndrome, a vascular condition she was diagnosed with earlier this year due to symptoms she describes as “unusual severe pains” that she’s experienced for the past two years.

The issue arises when the left kidney’s main vein (the left renal vein) gets squeezed, frequently leading to intense side pain near the back, discomfort in the abdomen, and traces of blood appearing in the urine.

Additionally, Gemma mentioned that she was also diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, a vascular issue where pelvic veins become compressed.

Additionally, Gemma suffers from a condition called pelvic congestion syndrome, which is characterized by discomfort originating from enlarged veins within her pelvic area.

In reference to last year’s mini-stroke (TIA) I experienced in 2024, it’s possible that May Thurner syndrome could have been the underlying cause of the blood clot that led to my symptoms.

‘I’m a broken nightmare! Hopefully getting fixed!’ Gemma added, alongside heart emojis.

The post was flooded with supportive messages from fans and friends, including singer Shirley

Manson of Garbage, who wrote: ‘Dear GOD Gemma, I’m so sorry darling. What a lot to deal with.

‘It totally sucks BUM. Feel better. You deserve a life free of pain. Sending love love love.’

In a show of solidarity, the iconic British punk fashion designer, Pam Hogg, expressed her condolences by saying: “Oh my goodness Gemma, it’s tragic to hear that you’re still dealing with this… Sending you a heap of love… Take care of yourself, gorgeous xxx.

In a frank disclosure, Gemma discussed extensively for the first time about all her medical diagnoses.

Her health troubles have increasingly come to light in recent years.

Around mid-year 2024, Gary disclosed that Gemma had received medical intervention for an irregular heartbeat which caused her heart rate to soar to potentially harmful extremes. He characterized this period as a “frightening” time for their family.

Not long after, he disclosed on social media that she had suffered a mini-stroke.

During that period, they were busy arranging his tour in the UK, and Gary implied that the sudden health issue had taken everyone by surprise.

Gemma has been married to the Cars singer for nearly three decades.

In the 2000s, she played a significant role in redefining his public return to fame following a decline in his career from the late 80s to early 90s.
