Gary Numan’s brother has unexpectedly passed away. This news comes shortly after Numan became visibly emotional and upset his audience during a concert in Birmingham.
The innovative electro-pop musician had difficulty finishing his performance after sharing with the audience at the O2 Academy that he’d received some very upsetting news earlier that day.
Gary Numan, 67, confirmed his brother John‘s passing in a statement released Monday evening.
He shared the sad news that his brother, John, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning in Leeds. John was only 60 years old.
Oh my god, I just heard the news and I’m completely devastated! Apparently, John collapsed right after seeing Gary Numan – he had a heart attack while walking to his car! It happened right after they said goodbye, can you believe it? It’s just… awful. I’m so worried about him!
He joined me at my Telekon show that evening, and we spent the time reconnecting, sharing stories, and discussing his recent passion for reading.

I said goodbye with a hug at the tour bus around 12:20am, and asked how far he’d have to walk to his car. I always felt uneasy about him walking alone at night.
It didn’t seem like he had far to go, so we said goodbye and I watched him walk off. Tragically, he never reached his car; his heart gave out before he could.
I’ll never forget the possibility that we left him there, helpless and lying in the rain, just a short distance away. It’s something that will stay with me always.
‘Luckily a kind person saw him and called an ambulance, but it was too late.’
Numan recently began a national tour to mark the 45th anniversary of his famous album, Telekon.
He’s been playing the entire album live for his fans, including popular songs like ‘We Are Glass’, ‘I Die: You Die’, and ‘This Wreckage’.
Fans expressed concern online after Gary Numan appeared upset during a show at the O2 in Birmingham. One fan wrote that Numan seemed distressed, mentioning he’d received some difficult news but would share details in a few days, and wished him well.
It was tough watching him get so upset during the PPNM event – I don’t think the explanation will be good when we hear it. He’s a true professional for continuing to compete despite everything.
‘Hearing today that Gary was struggling in his Birmingham show, sending love,’ said a third.
One person wrote, ‘What a fantastic and moving show! I hope everything is okay with his health or family.’
