Gary Lineker’s first TV role since announcing shock Match of the Day exit has been confirmed

Gary Lineker will make his television comeback, taking on a new position after recently announcing his departure from Match of the Day on BBC.

A well-known ex-footballer and sports commentator is set to appear on the star-studded lineup of ITV’s fresh series titled The Assembly. This program will showcase various prominent figures being questioned by a diverse panel of interviewers who are either autistic, neurodivergent, or have a learning disability.

The upcoming series, modeled after a lively French tradition, is set to offer a mix of chaos and warmth through candid, unguarded interviews with famous personalities, allowing them to reveal unique, sincere perspectives that might not surface in other situations.

Joining Lineker on the cast of “The Assembly” will be David Tennant, known for his role in “Doctor Who,” legendary EastEnders star Danny Dyer (who also appeared with Tennant in “Rivals”), and popular singer Jade Thirlwall.

Katie Rawcliffe, head of Entertainment & Daytime at ITV, expressed her joy as a well-respected group of celebrities have consented to join an innovative and unique show that will be airing on ITV1 and ITVX in the near future.

Gary, David, Jade, and Danny’s talks with The Assembl will surely deliver engaging, must-see content filled with genuine warmth. We can hardly wait to broadcast their interviews to our audience!

Last November, Lineker declared that he was going to resign from his position as host of Match of the Day, a role he had held for 25 years.

Although he departed from the football highlights program, Lineker will persist in his collaboration with the BBC, spearheading their 2026 World Cup broadcasts and serving as host for the FA Cup coverage during the 2025/26 sports season.

In addition, the presenter continues to feature on the “MOTD Top Ten” podcast, while his “The Rest Is Football” podcast is aired by the BBC on their platform, BBC Sounds.

It was announced by the BBC in January that Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan will be hosting Match of the Day beginning with the upcoming season.

The Assembly will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player later in the year.
