Garrett Wang pitched a Section 31 story idea for Harry Kim and Jake Sisko
As a long-time Trekkie who grew up with Voyager and fondly remember Garrett Wang’s Harry Kim, hearing his voice again in Lower Decks was like a warm, nostalgic blast from the past. However, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that it wasn’t live-action, especially since Kim has been absent from our screens for nearly two decades.
Tonight, fans of Lower Decks were taken aback as they heard a familiar voice and saw an animated likeness of a character who hadn’t appeared on our screens for quite some time – Harry Kim, played by Garrett Wang from Star Trek: Voyager. Although it was delightful to hear him speak again, it has been 19 years since we last saw him in live-action with the conclusion of Voyager in 2001.
In an interview with All Access Star Trek through Screenrant, Garrett Wang (the actor who plays Kim) expressed regret if this was his final Star Trek appearance. He’d be thrilled to participate in more Star Trek projects and proposed a collaboration between Harry Kim and Jake Sisko (Characters played by Garrett Wang and Cirroc Lofton respectively from Star Trek: Voyager and Deep Space Nine) in Section 31. Although it didn’t occur on-screen, their partnership was realized in IDW Publishing’s comic books, which took him by surprise.
In the universe of Star Trek comics, Harry Kim serves as a Section 31 operative. This came as quite a surprise to me, considering this wasn’t portrayed in live-action series. But if it was your decision to include it in the comic books, I see no issue with that.
By integrating Kim into the comic book realm within Star Trek, an innovative avenue for his return to the series has been created. This new setting promises a fresh perspective on Harry Kim, as we never envisioned him being part of a covert agency such as Section 31 during his time on Voyager. It’s this unexpected twist that makes it truly captivating.
It’s great to see Kim in the comics, but we’d love to see this side of his character coming to life onscreen. Forget giving him his own ship; give him his own team of agents that can uncover mutinous officers, stop enemy encroachments that could destroy the Federation, and ferret out moles in Starfleet Intelligence. That would be a Harry Kim I’d love to see!
