GameStop restricts Pokémon TCG Destined Rivals purchases ahead of May 30 release
GameStop takes the initiative to give everyone a fair chance for new Pokémon TCG products.
Just before the planned launch of Pokémon Trading Card Game: Destined Rivals, GameStop has implemented a restriction on purchases, allowing each customer to buy only one item per product code. This is done to ensure fair access to the new card set for all their customers.
At GameStop, individual booster packs remain wrapped within sleeves, but each customer is still restricted to purchasing a maximum of five such packs.
Community divided over GameStop’s Pokémon TCG purchase limit
In response to issues with resellers (scalpers), one of the major gaming merchandise retailers in the U.S. and Canada – GameStop – is taking steps to prevent these individuals from rapidly depleting their stock. According to an article published by Polygon on May 21, employees of GameStop have reported observing lines of suspected resellers attempting to beat regular customers, with some even setting up temporary camps outside stores.
In the world of Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), scalping has been a persistent issue. This practice artificially limits the availability of Pokémon cards by creating scarcity, causing increased resale values following store raids that occur shortly after they open their doors for the day.
According to their recent announcement, the new policy at this store permits a customer to acquire only one kind of item within a particular grouping. Therefore, when you go to GameStop on Destined Rivals’ release day, you will be restricted to buying a single Booster Bundle and, if your finances allow, a solitary Elite Trainer Box as well.
Some Twitter users pointed out potential loopholes in the rule, suggesting that scalpers might circumvent it by having relatives or friends make purchases on their behalf, or by visiting multiple GameStop stores.
Some pointed out that although the limit could assist in reducing excessive purchases, it may unwittingly affect legitimate collectors, particularly those focused on Destined Rivals, as this series boasts a vast array of cards hailing from two Japanese collections – Hot Wind Arena and The Glory of Team Rocket.
On May 30, 2025, you’ll be able to find the Pokemon TCG: Destined Rivals collection at retailers like GameStop. This set predominantly showcases Pokemon from Team Rocket, along with other creatures linked to famous trainers in the series, such as Steven, Ethan, Cynthia, Marnie, and Arven.
As a card enthusiast, I’m all fired up about the upcoming releases, particularly the Special Edition illustrations of my favorite picks: Ethan’s Ho-Oh EX, Giovanni’s Mewtwo EX, and Cynthia’s Garchomp EX. Can’t wait to get my hands on them!
