Gamefound working with Hasbro on Asara

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and intrigue as I witness the unfolding saga between Gamefound, Kickstarter, BackerKit, and now, the mighty Hasbro. The board gaming world has always been a vibrant, ever-evolving landscape, and this latest development is like a breath of fresh air.

In the competitive world of board gaming, Gamefound – a rising crowdfunding platform from Poland – is challenging industry giants like Kickstarter and BackerKit. Recently, they’ve secured Hasbro, a century-old game and toy publisher, as their client. This September, Hasbro will debut its first project on Gamefound, which might signal a significant shift in the crowdfunding landscape for games.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting trend over the past decade – crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter have been a game-changer for independent creators and small publishers in the board game industry. They’ve been responsible for bringing countless innovative games to life, accounting for nearly a third of Kickstarter’s total earnings. Recently, new players have entered the scene, with Gamefound making quite an impact. In 2022 alone, they raised an astounding $28.3 million for tabletop projects, and in 2023, that figure skyrocketed to $56 million! Now, even one of the industry giants is taking notice. It’s an exciting time to be a part of this thriving community!

Before the pandemic, Hasbro established their own crowdfunding site called Haslab. They often use this platform to finance new collectibles for fans of toy lines like Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. However, there was a slight misstep in the board game sector as they failed to meet their target for funding a revival of the adored Heroscape board game series. (Later on, Renegade Game Studio picked it up and is now accepting pre-orders.)

Currently, Hasbro is considering alternative crowdfunding avenues. Their initial attempt involves reviving the 2010 game “Asara”, a city-building game, which has undergone a transformation with a vibrant, futuristic neon theme.

“Through collaboration with Gamefound, Hasbro will engage with an enthusiastic board game community, enhancing the exposure and input on our upcoming projects,” stated the Rhode Island-based company in an email to TopMob. “We’re thrilled to get direct insights from our devoted followers about how we can enhance our gaming experiences and bring back the games they cherish. At Gen Con, we received fantastic feedback from fans, and we’re actively gathering more suggestions from those eager to see this game return.”

From what TopMob was informed by Hasbro, there are no unique agreements – either for exclusivity or revenue sharing – with Gamefound. It appears that Hasbro treats all creators, regardless of their background, under similar business conditions.

Gamefound declined to comment on any business agreements that may or may not be in place.

Gamefound’s COO, Maciej Kuc, expressed his delight in an email to TopMob, stating that it’s a tremendous professional honor for Gamefound to have Hasbro entrust them with their campaign. On a personal level, it’s equally gratifying. He had the pleasure of meeting most of the Avalon Hill team and admires their passion, dedication, and collaborative spirit. They are wonderful partners to work alongside.
